HENNY HUGHES (Hennessy), runner-up to First Samurai (Giant's Causeway) in

both the Champagne S. (G1) and Hopeful S. (G1), sizzled four furlongs in a

bullet :47 over a fast track at Belmont Park on Friday in advance of next

Saturday's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). The chestnut colt was timed going the

opening quarter-mile in :23 2/5. It was easily the fastest of 24 works at

the distance.

Henny Hughes won his first three starts, including the Saratoga

Special S. (G2), by a combined 24 3/4 lengths.

After finishing second in the Champagne, Henny Hughes was transferred to

trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Patrick Biancone, the previous trainer, instructed

jockey Gary Stevens to send the colt to the lead in an attempt to defeat First

Samurai in the Champagne.

"We won't do that again, :43 3/5," McLaughlin said referring to the Champagne

half-mile fraction. "He could be on the lead, but it won't be in :43 3/5.

Hopefully, we draw outside and see what's happening inside."

Edgar Prado will ride Henny Hughes in the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile.

SPIN (Distorted Humor) breezed five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 under jockey Jerry

Bailey in preparation for the

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). The move was the fourth fastest of nine

works at the distance. She was timed in fractions of :25 1/5 and :48 4/5.

"In her workouts in Chicago, we've given her race-like conditions where

she'll sit behind horses, take some dirt and split horses, which is probably why

she was able to go wire-to-wire at six furlongs in her first start and then rate

going a mile in her second start," Mitchell said.

Mitchell is the daughter of former jockey, trainer and racing official Bill

Boland.

Multiple Grade 2 winner ARTIE SCHILLER (El Prado [Ire]) blazed six furlongs

in 1:12 2/5 over a firm inner turf course in advance of the Breeders' Cup Mile

(G1). The James Jerkens-trained colt most recently finished second as the 6-5

favorite to Funfair (GB) (Singspiel [Ire]) in the Kelso Breeders' Cup H. (G2),

which was decided at one mile over the Widener Turf Course.

Clockers caught Artie Schiller in early fractions of :26 and :37 1/5.

"I was on the pony so I didn't really see much of the work," Jerkens said.

"From what I did see he looked very good and he seemed fine coming back and

cooling out."

At Santa Anita, Haskell Invitational H. (G1) winner ROMAN RULER

(Fusaichi Pegasus) smoked four furlongs in a bullet :46 1/5 over a fast track in

preparation for the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at six furlongs, a distance at

which he has never raced. He worked in company with Run Rebecca Run (Swiss

Yodeler), who was clocked in :46 4/5.

"He went good; he just cruised around there," trainer Bob Baffert said.

Grade 3 winner LAURA'S LUCKY BOY (Theatrical [Ire]) breezed seven furlongs in

1:28 over a firm turf course at Santa Anita in advance of the Breeders' Cup Turf

(G1).

Trained by Richard Mandella, Laura's Lucky Boy finished a close fourth in the

Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship S. (G1) in his last start before being

bumped up to third via disqualification.

DRESSED TO KILL (Formal Gold) and ANN SUMMERS GOLD (Yankee Victor) have

both been scratched from the Juvenile Fillies.

Dressed to Thrill suffered an incomplete fracture of her left-front pastern

and is recovering at trainer George Weaver's Belmont barn after successful

surgery to repair the injury on Thursday.

"She came back sore after galloping Wednesday morning," trainer George Weaver

said. "The prognosis is as good as you could expect."
