Hidden Expression tops Fasig-Tipton leaderboard at $360,000

Last updated: 2/10/14 9:29 PM

Gainesway secured stakes-winning broodmare HIDDEN EXPRESSION (Yonaguska) for

$360,000 at Monday's concluding session of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter

Mixed Sale, topping the leaderboard for the entire two-day auction. The

seven-year-old, who was not bred in 2013, was consigned by Charlton (Mr. and

Mrs. Rick Abbott), agent for the Estate of Anne F. Thorington Complete

Dispersal.

Cataloged as Hip No. 219, Hidden Expression is a half-sister to 2009 Whitney

H. (G1) winner Bullsbay (Tiznow), whose first crop hits the racetrack in 2014;

Grade 3 victress Our Khrysty (Newfoundland); and Grade 2-placed multiple stakes

scorer Vegas No Show (Hard Spun). They were all produced by the multiple

stakes-placed The Hess Express (Lord Carson), from the further family of Grade

1-winning millionaire Grecian Flight (Cormorant).

Hidden Expression is a veteran of no fewer than four previous sales. A

$17,000 Keeneland November weanling, she RNA'd for $48,000 as a two-year-old in

training at OBS March. She went on to win both starts as a juvenile for Todd

Beattie, capped by a three-length decision in the 2009 Colleen at Monmouth. At

the end of a winless three-year-old season, Hidden Expression sold for $110,000

at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November, and signed off with a mark of 5-2-0-1,

$64,325.

In her last auction appearance, Hidden Expression brought $290,000 in foal to

Malibu Moon at Keeneland in November 2011. The resulting foal is a two-year-old

filly named Moonlit Bay. Hidden Expression has since produced a yearling filly

by Hard Spun.

Unraced broodmare prospect OLEANDA AVENUE (A.P. Indy), a full sister to Grade

3 winner Stratford Hill, went to Arch Bloodstock, agent, for $315,000. Offered

by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, the four-year-old filly sported Hip 334.

Oleanda Avenue is a daughter of Grade 1 star and $851,120-earner Harmony

Lodge (Hennessy), who won or placed in 15 stakes. She scored her signature win

in the 2003 Ballerina H. (G1) at Saratoga and finished a near-miss third as the

defending champion in 2004. Her only winner so far is Stratford Hill, who earned

his black-type laurel in the 2011 Shakertown (G3).

Harmony Lodge is a half-sister to multiple Grade 2 winner, millionaire and

sire Graeme Hall (Dehere); Grade 3 vixen Winn McCool (Giant's Causeway); and

multiple stakes heroine Win's Fair Lady (Dehere), the dam of Grade 3 queen First

Passage (Giant's Causeway).

Oleanda Avenue counts as her second dam Grade 3 victress Win Crafty Lady

(Crafty Prospector), who is herself a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Diligence (Miswaki).

An Arch half-brother to champion She Be Wild (Offlee Wild) ranked as the

sale's most expensive yearling when bringing a winning bid of $230,000 from

Catherine Parke, agent. The January 19 foal was consigned by Bluewater Sales,

agent, as Hip 420.

The Kentucky-bred dark bay is the fifth registered foal from Trappings

(Seeking the Gold), whose star offspring, She Be Wild, earned an Eclipse Award

as the champion two-year-old filly of 2009. The winner of the Breeders' Cup

Juvenile Fillies (G1), Arlington-Washington Lassie (G3) and Top Flight, she also

placed in the 2009 Alcibiades (G1) and the 2010 Ashland (G1). She Be Wild

amassed $1,355,540 from her 7-4-1-1 line.

The yearling's second dam is multiple stakes winner Duck Trap (Affirmed), and

in addition, this female line boasts 2002 Canadian champion turf horse

Portcullis (Smart Strike) and Grade 1 victress Carson Hollow (Carson City).

Following the sale's second and final session, Fasig-Tipton reported that 284

horses were sold Monday for a total of $9,052,400, with an average price of

$31,875 and a median of $16,000.

Cumulatively, over the expanded, two-day sale, 406 horses realized

$13,527,500, posting a $33,319 average and a $16,000 median.

The figures are not directly comparable to the old single-session format in

2013, but last year's gross ($13,781,700 from the sale of 245 horses) and median

($15,000) were similar. The average from a year ago, however, was $56,252,

buoyed by the draft from Eugene Melnyk's Winding Oaks Farm.
