High Fly to stand for $5,000

Grade 1 winner HIGH FLY (Atticus) will begin his stud career at Live Oak Stud

near Ocala, Florida, where he will stand for a fee of $5,000. The three-year-old

was recently retired from racing after suffering

a condylar fracture in his right front leg. The career-ending injury occurred in

a workout prior to the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).

High Fly, who began the season with a nine-length romp in the Aventura S. at

Gulfstream Park, finished a close third in the Holy Bull S. (G3) before

reeling off victories in the Fountain of Youth S. (G2) and Florida Derby (G1).

Regarded as one of the top contenders for the spring classics, he went to the

post as the 7-1 fourth choice in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and was the 5-1 second

choice behind Afleet Alex in the Preakness S. (G1), but the chestnut colt

finished 10th both times. Returning from a freshening in what turned out to be his final start, High Fly finished second to subsequent

Breeders' Cup Sprint winner Silver Train (Old Trieste) in the Jerome H. (G2) at Belmont Park.

High Fly won five of nine starts and earned $927,300. He is out of 1990

Matron S. (G1) runner-up Verbasle (Slewpy) and is a half-brother to multiple

Group 3 winner Estimaar (Holy Bull) and stakes winner Smokey Mirage (Holy Bull).

His next three dams are all multiple stakes winners and he hails from the same

female family as classic winner Summing.
