High Fly works for Florida Derby

Last updated: 3/19/05 4:57 PM

Fountain of Youth S. (G2) hero HIGH FLY (Atticus) breezed five-eighths

in 1:02 on the fast track at Palm Meadows Training Center on Saturday. The

chestnut has dropped only one start in his five-race career, finishing third in the Holy Bull S. (G3),

and will make his next start in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) on April 2.

The sophomore was moved from trainer Bill White's barn to that of Nick Zito

after his Holy Bull run and is ultimately headed for the May 7 Kentucky Derby

(G1). High Fly started off the year with an easy nine-length score in the

Aventura S. going a mile.

Florida Derby hopeful PAPI CHULLO (Comeonmom), runner-up in the Sham S. prior

to a fourth-place finish in the Fountain of Youth, returned to the Palm Meadows

track on Saturday for a gallop. Trainer Salvador Gonzalez has kept the gray colt

to his stall to keep a recent foot bruise from resurfacing.

"When I got here from California he seemed to be walking a little funny,"

Gonzalez said. "He had glued-on shoes, so we took them off and found a foot

bruise. It wasn't too bad, and he's OK."

Winless from four career starts, Papi Chullo will attempt to become the first

maiden to capture the Florida Derby.
