A field of seven has been entered for Sunday's 1 1/16-mile Hollywood
Breeders' Cup Oaks (G2), and four of these will be stretching out to a route for
the first time here. SHE'S AN ELEVEN (In Excess [Ire]) has spent much of her
career running at a mile and beyond, and we think that experience will give the
John Sadler charge an edge against her rivals here.
She's an Eleven hasn't posted as good BRIS numbers as some of her
competition, but the dark bay miss has proven she could do a lot despite not
posting huge Speed numbers. Two back in the 8 1/2-furlong Melair S., the
sophomore lass ran four wide while near the back of the field, rallied along the
backstretch and eventually pulled away for the easy 9 1/4-length score. She's an
Eleven then tried the Black-Eyed Susan S. (G2) at Pimlico, running a one-paced
fifth in that nine-furlong event, but still earned a 106 BRIS Late Pace rating
for her worst finish to date. She'll get a rider switch to Tyler Baze for
Sunday's race, and could get back to her winning ways in this spot.
DOWNTHEDUSTYROAD (Storm and a Half) could add some value to the exotics while
stretching out past six furlongs for the first time. She made her stakes debut
in the Rainbow Miss S. at Oaklawn Park two back, but was bumped at the start and
couldn't get into her usual up-front position. The bay miss did rally for a game
third, and returned last out for an easy, confidence-building seven-length score
in an allowance/optional claimer at Oaklawn. She was purchased and transferred
to the barn of Bob Baffert after that one, and will be making her first start
for that trainer here. Downthedustyroad may be stretching out, but could still
challenge for it all under Victor Espinoza.
SQUALLACIOUS (Summer Squall) brings an unbeaten two-race record into this
one. The Mike Puype-trained bay broke her maiden at Hollywood by 1 1/4 lengths
prior to a 3 1/2-length allowance score last out. She'll also be going a route
for the first time here, but has yet to find anything to stop her current
streak. Squallacious has been working well in advance of this one, getting five
furlongs in :59 3/5 over the track most recently, and could continue moving
forward with Corey Nakatani in the irons.
MYSTERY GIRL (Stormy Atlantic) owns only a maiden win, that coming last July
at Del Mar, but the Christopher Paasch charge has never finished worse than
fourth in her seven-race career. Most recently, the chestnut miss was just three
parts of a length back in second in the Railbird S. (G3) over the track while
making up ground late. The extra distance here could be just what she needs to
finally find the winner's circle again. Include in all exotics and consider for
the win.
HYSTERICALADY (Distorted Humor) is one of the quicker fillies in this field,
earning a 99 Speed figure last out for a two-length allowance win at Bay
Meadows. She'll be up near the front under Pat Valenzuela and could easily earn
a place in the top three. BETTARUN FAST (Kelly Kip) captured her last two, the
Railbird and Santa Paula S. (G3), and should be considered for a share, but
we'll watch to see how she handles her first race past seven furlongs before
recommending for the win.
CHOSEN ROYALTY (In Excess [Ire]) finished well back in third in the Melair
last out and we don't see her threatening here.
