Is It True dies
IS IT TRUE (Raja Baba), winner of the 1988 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), died
Thursday at Walmac Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. The 21-year-old suffered an
apparent heart attack while in his paddock, farm officials said.
Bred in Kentucky by Warner Jones, Is It True finished second in the 1988
Champagne S. (G1) prior to his upset over the heavily favored Easy Goer in the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Owned by Eugene Klein and trained by
D. Wayne Lukas, the bay colt went on to capture the Jim Dandy S. (G2) and Riva
Ridge S. (G3) the following season. Is It True earned $819,999 from a 15-5-2-2
line.
Offered as part of the Klein Dispersal during the 1989 Keeneland November
sale, Is It True sold for $1 million for stud duty in Australia. He stood five
seasons exclusively Down Under, then spent the next five seasons as a dual
hemisphere stallion, shuttling from Heytesbury Stud in West Australia to Walmac
International in Kentucky. His second U.S. crop produced the Grade 1-winning
millionaire and sire Yes It's True.
From 14 crops to race, Is It True has sired 27 stakes winners, and his
offspring have earned nearly $19 million.
"Is It True was a grand horse, one of the last links to Bold Ruler through a
line other than Seattle Slew," Walmac Managing Partner John T.L. Jones III said.
"Although he was also one of the first of the shuttle stallions, he will always be
remembered for his (1 1/4-length) defeat of Easy Goer in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Juvenile,
not to mention the upset he caused in the process. We are honored to have been
associated with him."
