Johannesburg colt sets record at Midlantic sale

Hip No. 246, a chestnut colt by Johannesburg named ZOUNDS, brought the top

price of $625,000 at Monday's opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic

Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale at Timonium, Maryland, a record high for the

Midlantic juvenile sale. Consigned by Classic

Bloodstock (Danzel Brendemuehl), agent, the Florida-bred was sold to Joe Brocklebank as agent for Jeff Singer. Produced by the winning Hasty Appeal

(World Appeal), the April 22 juvenile is a half-brother to Dr. Park, winner of

the 2001 Will Rogers S. (G3), and hails from the same family as multiple Grade 1

winners Borrego and I Ain't Bluffing as well as the Canadian champion two-year-old male in 1992, Truth of It

All. The session-topping colt's third dam is 1962 champion

two-year-old filly Smart Deb.

At the under tack show, Zounds worked a

quarter-mile in :21 4/5. Zounds was previously purchased for $175,000 at the

Ocala Breeders' Sales Company August Yearling Sale.

Zayat Stables went to $425,000 to acquire the second most expensive juvenile

on the day, Hip 102, a Silver Deputy colt consigned by Murray Smith, agent. The

May 17 gray is out of the multiple stakes-placed Dynaformer mare Kopenhagen,

making him a half-brother to Strong Contender (Maria's Mon), who finished third

in both the April 15 Blue Grass S. (G1) and Saturday's Peter Pan S. (G2). His

second dam, Eterna Fe (Arg) (Good Bloke), a Group 1 winner in her native land,

has also produced stakes winner New Aspirations. This is the

immediate family of Eterna Girl, five times Group 1-placed in Argentina.

The Kentucky-bred sped two furlongs in :21 3/5 at the training preview. He

was acquired at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale last year for $60,000.

On Monday, 183 juveniles were sold for an aggregate of $9,827,000, which

represented an increase of 8.8 percent from the opening session in 2005, when

194 horses brought a total of $9,035,500. The average was $53,699, a rise of

15.3 percent from last year's figure of $46,575, while the median was $32,000,

4.9 percent above the $30,500 from one year ago.
