Just a Way retains top spot on World's Best Racehorse

Japan's Just a Way retained his position atop the Longines World's

Best Racehorse Rankings when the latest edition of those ratings were released

on Thursday.

The Heart's Cry five-year-old earned a mark of 130 for his 6 1/4-length victory in the

Group 1 Dubai Duty Free on March

29. Just A Way added the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen to his resume next out in his return to Japan

on June 8 and finished eighth when stretching out to 12 furlongs for the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

on October

5 at Longchamp in France.

A quartet of runners share second billing with a mark

of 126, including the European sophomore trio of Australia, The Grey Gatsby and

Kingman, the latter of whom was just named Cartier Horse of the Year on Tuesday

evening at the 24th annual Cartier Racing Awards in London. Dual South African Horse

of the Year Variety Club is the fourth of

the group to hit 126, a mark that was achieved when he won

the Group 1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong on May 4 in his final

career start.

Progressing up the rankings from 121 to 125 was Bayern, who wired the Breeders' Cup Classic

on November

1. He shares his mark with Group 1 Deutsches Derby winner Sea the Moon and Treve, who on October 5 became just the second horse to win

the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe twice.

California Chrome achieved a mark of 124

for his third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic, equaling the figures he achieved in

winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Six are tied with California Chrome at that

mark -- Arc and Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Flintshire; multiple Grade

1-winning mult-millionaire Game on Dude; Japanese champion Gold Ship; Group 1

Epsom Oaks and Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth

II heroine Taghrooda; multiple Group 1-scoring European highweight The Fugue; and

Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Toast of New York.

In another notable division shake-up, recent Group 1 Darley Classic

winner Terravista has moved into joint leadership of the sprinting division with

compatriot and multiple Group 1 victor Lankan Rupee with a mark of 123.
