|
The sixth session of Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale continued to show across-the-board gains on Sunday. A total of 276 horses were purchased on the day for $13,435,500 at an average of $48,679 and a median of $40,000. Those numbers represent increases of 25.1 percent, 20.1 percent and 25 percent, respectively, over last year's corresponding session when 265 horses were bought for $10,740,300 at an average of $40,529 and a median of $32,000. The sale already surpassed the total for the entire 2012 auction on Saturday, and Sunday's session just continued to add to that number. Thus far, 1,339 horses have brought $170,456,700, a jump of 36.8 percent over last year when 1,202 sold for $124,586,900 through six days. The cumulative sale average sits at $127,301, a 22.8 percent increase on the 2012 average of $103,650 at this same point, and the median has risen 40 percent, from $50,000 to $70,000. Two mares each sold for $185,000 to be the top prices on Sunday.

First up was ONE FOXY GREY (Big Brown), consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales
Agency, agent. Nancy Shuford had the winning bid on Hip No. 1619, who previously
brought $220,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling.
One Foxy Grey only raced four times, compiling a 4-0-1-1 mark to go along
with $18,428 in earnings. The gray three-year-old is the first registered foal
out of Grade 1 heroine Irish Smoke (Smoke Glacken), who is a half-sister to the
dam of Grade 1 victress Book Review (Giant's Causeway).
One Foxy Grey's third dam is Grade 3 winner Added Elegance (Stutz Blackhawk),
who produced Grade 2 diva Added Gold (Gilded Time) and Grade 3 vixen Added Asset
(Lord at War). Others of note in this female family include Argentinean champion
*Vit Reina (Vitelio) and Group 1 winner Polaris Flight (Northern Flagship).
One Foxy Grey sold in foal to Midnight Lute on an April 26 cover.
HIGH MAINTENANCE (Danehill) was gaveled down to FD Bloodstock for $185,000 as
well. Entering the ring as Hip 1932, the British-bred mare came from the
Paramount Sales, agent, consignment.
High Maintenance captured a pair of U.S. stakes while placing in the 2002
Valley View (G3) during her time on track. She racked up $137,184 in earnings to
go along with her 12-4-2-2 career mark, and is the dam of French Group 3-placed
Silver Black (Hennessy).
High Maintenance took her third trip through the auction ring on Sunday,
having previously sold for 160,000 guineas ($247,094) as a Tattersalls October
yearling in 2000 and bringing $425,000 as a Keeneland January broodmare in 2004.
The bay mare is out of the unraced Speak Softly to Me (Ogygian), who is herself
a daughter of stakes winner Ocean's Answer (Northern Answer).
The Ontario-bred Ocean's Answer is a half-sister to a pair of Northern
Dancer-sired siblings in dual Canadian champion Northernette and English/Irish
champion Storm Bird, the latter of whom is best known as the sire of
breed-shaping stallion Storm Cat and classic victor Summer Squall.
Descendents of Ocean's Answer include French highweight sire Green Tune
(Green Dancer) as well as his half-sister and fellow French highweight Pas de
Reponse (Danzig).
The sale continues daily through November 14 with sessions beginning each day
at 10 a.m. (EST).
