Khalid Abdullah named top British breeder
Khalid Abdullah's Banstead Manor Stud was yesterday awarded the Queen's
Silver Cup for being the leading British-based breeder at the annual
Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) Awards. The Juddmonte operation was
collecting the prize for the fifth time this decade after accruing the most
prize money in Great Britain and Ireland from mares normally resident in the
United Kingdom, and also picked up the H. J. Joel Silver Salver. That was handed
to Arrive (Kahyasi), the dam of this year's G1 Pretty Polly S. (Ire-G1) heroine
Promising Lead (Danehill) and Sun Chariot S. (Eng-G1) and Matriarch S. (G1)
third Visit (GB) (Oasis Dream [GB]), who joins her full-sister Hasili (Ire) in
winning the British-based Broodmare of the Year Award.
Cheveley Park Stud's Pivotal maintained his position as the top British-based
stallion, taking his third successive Barleythorpe Cup for the leading flat sire
in terms of individual winners and also picked up a second consecutive BBA
Silver Cigar Box, awarded to the leading British-based stallion according to
earnings. Tweenhills Farm & Stud's resident Lucky Story received the Tattersalls
Silver Salver as the leading British-based first-season flat sire, while Lawn
Stud secured the TBA Silver Rose Bowl for flat Breeder of the Year as a result
of the exploits of this year's Epsom Oaks (Eng-G1) winner Look Here (Hernando
[Fr]).
The late Ann Jenkins, former owner of Heatherwold Stud and breeder of the
1990 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) winner Saumarez (GB), was honored with
the TBA Silver Salver of Special Merit, while Southcombe Farm's James Clark
received the Langham Cup for Small Breeder of the Year courtesy of the Nunthorpe
S. (Eng-G1) winner Borderlescott (Compton Place).
