Kid Dreams scores in Hawthorne Derby

Last updated: 10/5/13 9:23 PM

Robert S. Evans' homebred Kid Dreams came running down the center of the

track to take Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000

Hawthorne Derby by 7 3/4 lengths under jockey Francisco Torres.

Sent off the 9-2 third choice, the Neil Drysdale pupil paid $11.20 for his

romping win, which came in a final time of 2:01 2/5 for nine furlongs over

Hawthorne's soft turf.

Mongolian Saturday led the way under the wire for the first time and into the

backstretch with 5-2 favorite Five Iron keeping in close attendance to his

outside through fractions of :25 4/5, :52 1/5 and 1:18 4/5. Kid Dreams was

sitting in midpack on the inside as the leaders set the pace before angling

three wide around the final turn.

The bay colt easily overtook the laboring Mongolian Saturday in the stretch

and drew off while Charming Kitten got up to take second. Five Iron finished

another 1 3/4 lengths back in third, while Dorsett completed the top four under

the wire. Always Curious, Lukes Alley, Mongolian Saturday, Ultimo Tango, Moro

Tap and Infinite Magic completed the order under the wire.

Kid Dreams earned his first stakes win in this spot after being elevated to

third in the Charlie Barley via disqualification following a fourth-place

finish. The bay colt also ran a close fourth in the Del Mar Derby on September

1, and now shows $258,205 in career earnings to go along with his 11-3-1-2

scorecard.

The Ontario-bred Kid Dreams is out of the winning Silver Hawk mare Dreams,

making him a half-brother to Grade 2 victor Dreamy Kid and Grade 2 runner-up

Elysium Fields. Dreams is herself a half-sibling to Grade 3 queen My Girl

Jeannie and Grade 1-placed stakes winner Triple Buck.

Farther back in this female family once can find champions Silent Screen and

Dark Mirage.
