SILVERFOOT (With Approval) showed his ability to handle the undulating course
at Kentucky Downs when capturing last year's Kentucky Cup Turf S. (G3), and the
six-year-old gelding will be back to win another trophy on Tuesday. The Dallas
Stewart trainee heads a field of eight entered in the $200,000, 1 1/2-mile
event.
Sixth in the 2005 Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), Silverfoot earned his first win
this season when capturing the Louisville H. (G3) three starts back and then
stepped up to face Grade 1 rivals in his last two outings, recording a solid
fourth, only 3 1/4 lengths back of the winning English Channel (Smart Strike),
in the United Nations S. (G1) two starts ago. The late-running gray has
registered huge BRIS Speed and Late Pace numbers this year, and Silverfoot
romped by 6 3/4 lengths when taking last year's Kentucky Cup Turf. We won't go
against the heavy favorite.
MAJOR RHYTHM (Rhythm) exits a solid second in a listed stakes at Remington
Park and will likely be on or close to the early lead on Saturday. The
seven-year-old gelding stretched out to 1 1/2 miles successfully when notching
his first graded win, the Stars and Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf H. (G3), at
Arlington Park this summer, and he's finished in the money in five of his last
six attempts, the lone exception coming in the Arlington Million (G1). Major
Rhythm appears to have the best chance at an upset.
DYNALYMPIC (Dynaformer) relishes longer distances and owns decent tactical
speed. After recording four straight unplaced finishes, the Tom Amoss charge
finished second in a listed stakes at Arlington Park last time. Dynalympic may
be able to carry that momentum forward here with another top-three placing.
Three-year-old ROCK LOBSTER (Mt. Livermore) earned his first graded win in
the 1 3/16-mile Saranac S. (G3) against his own age group last time, but he's
tackling elders for the first time and it's hard to gauge how he fits in with
this seasoned group.
LORD CARMEN (Ordway) knocked off Dynalympic last time and also has plenty of
experience at 12 furlongs, winning twice from four starts. The former claimer
still has some class concerns in this spot, but he could be a factor in the
exotics.
ROCHESTER (Green Dancer) is a horse for the course (4-2-2-0), and his
previous experiences have come strictly in this event, winning the Kentucky Cup
Turf in 2002-03. Trainer Jonathan Sheppard hopes the 10-year-old gelding will
experience a resurgence when returning to the friendly confines on Saturday, but
Rochester is unplaced from three starts this year. We'll go against the classy
veteran.
EMBOSSED (Ire) (Mark of Esteem [Ire]) will be running late and merits some
consideration for a minor award. CAUSEWAY (Giant's Causeway) looks overmatched
in this spot off a maiden special weight win at Ellis Park.
