Latent Heat eyes San Carlos

Last updated: 2/15/07 4:50 PM

Malibu S. (G1) winner LATENT HEAT (Maria's Mon) doesn't tower over the

opposition in Saturday's $150,000 San Carlos H. (G2), but the Bobby Frankel

charge is squarely the one to beat in the seven-furlong affair. The classy

four-year-old colt exits an impressive two-length score over a tough field in

the seven-furlong Malibu, and he owns a winning attitude with five victories in

his last eight starts. Regular rider Edgar Prado will fly to California for the

mount.

Grade 1 victors SIREN LURE (Joyeux Danseur) and PROUD TOWER TOO (Proud Irish)

are the main rivals. The Art Sherman-trained Siren Lure captured five stakes in

2006, including the Triple Bend Invitational H. (G1), Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup

H. (G2) and Los Angeles H. (G3), and finished a good second in the Vernon O.

Underwood S. (G3) most recently. Proud Tower Too, the 2005 Malibu winner,

recorded an excellent triumph in the Dubai Golden Shaheen S. (UAE-G1) last March

and will be making his third start off the layoff for Sal Gonzalez. He exits a

solid runner-up finish in the Sunshine Millions Sprint S.

Grade 2 winners HARVARD AVENUE (You and I) and NORTHERN SOLDIER (Yankee

Victor) are also in the mix, and Frankel will also send out the uncoupled

RAMSGATE (Runaway Groom), who will make his stakes debut here off a pair of smart

allowance/optional claiming wins at Hollywood Park.

Northern California shipper RAISE THE BLUFF (Pine Bluff) will break from the

rail with Tyler Baze and a 113-pound impost. Next in the gate comes PUBLICATION

(Petionville), Michael Baze, 113; MAJESTIC STREAM (Fusaichi Pegasus), William

Antongeorgi III, 114; Latent Heat, 118; SWING YOUR PARTNER (Wheaton), Jorge

Chavez, 113; Proud Tower Too, David Cohen, 120; TONTINE TOO (Concerto), Garrett

Gomez, 114; Siren Lure, Richard Migliore, 121; Ramsgate, David Flores, 114;

Northern Soldier, Aaron Gryder, 115; and Harvard Avenue, Victor Espinoza, 118.
