Lavender Sky brings $340,000, business rises at
Fasig-Tipton
Buoyed by the sale of three mares and a stallion prospect for more than
$200,000 each, Monday's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale at the Newtown Paddocks
near Lexington, Kentucky, showed gains in gross and average while the median
remained steady from a year ago. Leading the top sellers was the multiple Grade
2-placed LAVENDER SKY (Mt. Livermore), who was gaveled down to William W. Lockridge, agent, for $340,000. Offered by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, the
six-year-old sported Hip No. 149.
Sold as a broodmare prospect, Lavender Sky retires with a record of 19-2-4-4,
$195,852. Among her four stakes-placings were a second in the 2008 San Gorgonio
H. (G2) and thirds in the 2007 Dahlia H. (G2) and 2008 Santa Ana H. (G2). Produced
from the stakes-winning Munnaya (Nijinsky II), Lavender Sky is a half-sister to
stakes winner and multiple Group 3-placed Mystic Melody (Seattle Slew) and the
stakes-placed Numaany (A.P. Indy) and Yaya (Rahy).
Lavender Sky hails from a prolific female family. Her third dam, Canadian
champion and Broodmare of the Year Kamar (Key to the Mint), produced Canadian
champion Key to the Moon (Wajima) and Grade 1 winners Gorgeous (Slew o' Gold)
and Seaside Attraction (Seattle Slew). Kamar, a full sister to Grade 1 queen
Love Smitten, is the ancestress of 2001 champion turf male Fantastic Light
(Rahy), 1995 champion two-year-old filly Golden Attraction (Mr. Prospector),
French highweight Desert Lord (Green Desert), and Grade 1 winners Swift Temper (Giant's Causeway), Cape Town (Seeking the Gold)
and Flashing (A.P. Indy).
Canadian Grade 2 winner BEAR'S KID (Lemon Drop Kid), consigned by Glenmalure
Farm (Peter & Gina Kirwan), agent, sold as a stallion prospect for $260,000 to
Novel Group. The seven-year-old captured the 2005 Summer S. (Can-G2) and later
placed in the Labeeb S. in 2007. He ran his last race in January 2008 and
concluded his racing career with a record of 15-3-3-2, $249,599.
Bear's Kid is the first foal out of the Grade 1-winning millionaire Tap to
Music (Pleasant Tap), a half-sister to multiple Grade 2 winner and sire Northern
Afleet (Afleet). His third dam, Grade 3 winner Stellarette (Tentam), is a
half-sister to Kamar; thus he shares the same notable relations as Lavender Sky.
Bear's Kid was cataloged as Hip 333.
The Grade 3-placed stakes winner JULIA TUTTLE (Giant's Causeway) was sold as
a racing/broodmare prospect for $235,000 to Bowden Global Equine. She was
offered by Summerfield (Francis & Barbara Vanlangendonck), agent, and toured the
ring as Hip 136.
Last seen running a close fifth in the October 10 Violet S. (G3), the
five-year-old Julia Tuttle possesses a mark of 20-4-2-2, $185,051. Third in the
2008 Virginia Oaks (G3) in her stakes debut, she followed that effort with a win
in the Twin Lights S. at Monmouth Park and placed in the Light Hearted S. last
July at Delaware Park.
A half-sister to the stakes-placed Candy's Bro (E Dubai) and Bankin on Candy
(Banker's Gold), Julia Tuttle is out of the winning Candy Cane (Arg) (Ride the Rails), a full
sister to Argentinean champion, multiple Grade/Group 1 winner and noted sire Candy Ride (Arg). Candy
Cane is also a half-sister to Group 3 winner Candy Apple (Arg) (Halo Sunshine).
Other Argentinean notables from this family are multiple Group 1 winners City
West (Arg) (Candy Stripes) and Forty Fabuloso (Roar).
RGIRLDOESN'TBLUFF (Pine Bluff), a four-time stakes winner at Calder in
2006-07, sold to Town & Country Farms for $215,000. Wearing Hip 94 and offered
by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, the seven-year-old mare was sold along with her
four-week old foal, a filly by Medaglia d'Oro, who was born January 10.
Retired with a mark of 25-7-7-2, $241,270, Rgirldoesn'tbluff is out of the
stakes winner Chasing Wind (Mining), making her half-sister to the stakes-placed
Changing Numbers (Polish Numbers) and Grace Upon Grace (Rio Verde). This is the
family of the Grade 1-placed stakes winner Good Student (Arg) (Louis Quatorze).
On Monday, $3,052,600 was grossed from the sale of 192 horses, a rise of 27.6
percent from a year ago when $2,392,900 was realized from the sale of 206 head.
The average increased 36.9 percent, from $11,616 to $15,899, while the median
was unchanged at $5,000.
