Lawman retired

Classic winner LAWMAN (Invincible Spirit) has

been retired and will enter stud next season at Ballylinch Stud in

Ireland, according to Jour de Galop.

Claudio Marzocco and Enrico Ciampi's

three-year-old, hero of this year's Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) (Fr-G1) and Prix Jean Prat

(Fr-G1),

was a lackluster sixth to Manduro (Monsun) in the Prix Jacques le Marois (Fr-G1) at

Deauville on August 12 and was diagnosed with a liver ailment afterward. Though

Lawman had returned to training with Jean-Marie Beguigne, it was determined that

he had missed too much time and would not make the major autumn races.

Winner of his lone juvenile outing at Saint-Cloud, Lawman burst to prominence

in his third start this year with a victory in the Prix de Guiche (Fr-G3). He

added a famous front-running score under Frankie Dettori in the Prix du

Jockey-Club and then posted a three-length tally in the Jean Prat with Olivier

Peslier in the irons.

Ballylinch's John O'Connor had his eyes on the colt for quite some time.

"This past winter, Jean-Marie Beguigne and Paul Nataf came to see me at

Ballylinch in Ireland," O'Connor recalled. "Jean-Marie spoke to be about a

two-year-old that was exceptional. That two-year-old was obviously Lawman, and

that was when I decided to buy him."

When asked what he liked about the colt, O'Connor replied, "Everything! His

pedigree, his conformation, his speed, the distances that he has succeeded at."

O'Connor stressed that while there had been "plenty of interest in him

already" from English and Irish breeders, Lawman would be available to French

breeders. A 75,000 Deauville August

yearling, the bay colt is out of Laramie (Gulch), making him a half-brother to Latice (Ire), the 2004 Prix de Diane (Fr-G1) heroine, as well as Group 3 winner

and Group 1-placed Satri (Mujadil).

Lawman retires with a record of 7-4-1-0 and earnings of $1,547,746.
