Leroidesanimaux posts easy win in Atto Mile

Last updated: 9/18/05 7:09 PM

Breaking a step slow on Sunday, TNT Stud's LEROIDESANIMAUX (Brz) (Candy

Stripes) found himself chasing Royal Regalia (Cozzene) through an opening

quarter in :23 during the early running of Woodbine's $849,756

Atto Mile

(Can-G1). The situation soon righted itself, though, as the Bobby Frankel charge

easily moved up along the rail to take over, continuing on unchallenged through

fractions of :45 4/5 and 1:10 1/5 before completing the feature event in 1:35 on

the yielding turf. The final margin was 7 3/4 lengths at the wire with

jockey John Velazquez just along for the ride.

"From post one, I wanted to make sure he broke well and got a good

position," Velazquez said. "Once I got in a good position, I knew he was

comfortable, and after that I just kind of sat against him. I just kind of shook

him up and he responded right away. I shook the whip at him and I hit him one time

and he kept opening up on the field. He did it pretty easily."

Sent off the heavy 3-5 favorite in the nine-horse field, Leroidesanimaux

returned $3.30, $2.80 and $2.20 while keying the $58 exactor, $397.70 triactor

and $1,511.65 superfecta ($1) (1-9-8-3). Mobil (Langfuhr) made a game run from

the back to take second, but was not match for the winner, paying $13.10

and $6.60 at 26-1. Le Cinquieme Essai (Fastness [Ire]) rounded out the top three

at 18-1, giving back $5.30 for finishing a length back of Mobil and a length in

front of fourth-placer Vanderlin (GB) (Halling).

King of Happiness (Spinning World), Awesome Action (Awesome Again), Sophia's

Prince (Schossberg), A to the Z (Benchmark) and Royal Regalia completed the

order under the wire.

Leroidesanimaux pushed his earnings past the million mark with this win, now

showing $1,253,377 to go along with a 12-9-1-0 career mark. The lightly raced

five-year-old gave Frankel and Velazquez their second win in the Atto Mile after

they previously teamed up to take the 2000 edition with Riviera and made his

trainer the first to have a winner in both the Queen's Plate (Wild Desert [Wild

Rush]) and Atto Mile in the same year.

Frankel said that Leroidesanimaux would probably be supplemented to the

Breeders' Cup.

The five-year-old Leroidesanimaux adds this win to scores in the Citation H.

(G1), Frank E. Kilroe Mile H. (G1), Fourstardave H. (G2), Inglewood H. (G3) and

Morvich H. (G3). He was bred by Haras Bage do Sul in Brazil and is out of

Dissemble (GB) (Ahonoora), who has an unnamed yearling filly by War Chant and an

unnamed weanling colt by Giant's Causeway.

Earlier on the card, Bear Stables Ltd's BEAR'S KID (Lemon Drop Kid) upset a

field of seven in the $241,199

Summer S. (Can-G2), posting a front-running 1

3/4-length victory as the 15-1 second-longest shot on the board. Trained by Reade Baker, the bay juvenile stopped the clock in 1:40 1/5 under jockey James

McAleney to earn his first grass victory. Bear's Kid broke his maiden by 1 1/2

lengths on the dirt in his second career start before running second in an

allowance last out in his turf debut.

William A. Sorokolit's CLASSIC STAMP (Regal Classic) earned her second

straight score in the $316,536

Canadian H. (Can-G2), getting the about

nine-furlong soft turf test in 1:47 1/5. With Emma-Jayne Wilson holding the reins,

the Darwin Banach-trained five-year-old was 1 1/4 lengths clear at the wire and

also placed third in the last season's E.P. Taylor S. (Can-G1). The dark bay

mare now owns a 22-6-6-5 career mark.
