Making his first start in the U.S. following a recent fourth in the Nijinsky
(Can-G2) at Woodbine, Lucky Speed rated in fifth most of the way, advanced into
contention approaching the stretch and wore down Panama Hat (Medicean) late to
win by three parts of a length under Andrasch Starke in course record time of
2:46.50 for 1 11/16 miles on firm turf. The 3-1 second choice, he paid $8.
