Mr. and Mrs. Marc C. Ferrell's two-year-old filly Madame Cactus rallied

strongly in the homestretch to score a two-length victory in Friday night's

$150,000

My

Trusty Cat Stakes at Delta Downs. The race was part of an opening night

program for the track's 2012-2013 meeting.

Under jockey Richard Eramia, Madame Cactus settled in midpack for most of the

seven-furlong race before angling off the rail turning for home. At the head of

the lane, the Cactus Ridge chestnut rallied stoutly to get past Sittin at the

Bar and Cayllano, who wound up second and third, respectively, at the finish

line. The winner covered the distance in 1:27 1/5 over the fast track.

"I got a perfect trip down at the rail," Eramia said. "When I asked her to

run she finished well. She is a very nice filly."

Madame Cactus entered this, her stakes bow, off a 6 1/4-length maiden score

at Santa Anita on September 29. She began her career under the tutelage of Peter

Eurton, running second in her debut at Del Mar in mid-August, but was shipped to

Louisiana and transferred to Steve Asmussen after her initial win.

Madame Cactus earned $90,000 for her exploits on Friday night to bump her

bankroll to $132,200. Her line now stands 3-2-1-0.

Bred in Kentucky by La Ciega LLC, Madame Cactus is out of the Mecke mare An

Annika Moment and counts as her fifth dam 1974 champion three-year-old filly

Chris Evert, who ran third in that year's Grade 1 Travers against the boys. This

star-studded family also includes 1988 champion three-year-old filly and

Kentucky Derby victress Winning Colors, as well as multiple Grade 1 winners

Chief's Crown, Classic Crown, Sightseek and Tates Creek.

The next assignment for Madame Cactus could be in the Grade 3, $500,000 Delta

Downs Princess on Delta Downs Jackpot Day, November 17. The race is part of a

special program that includes eight stakes races and more than $2.2 million in

purse money. That program has a special early post time of 1:15 p.m. (CST).

Delta Downs closes out its opening weekend of action on Saturday night with

another 11-race program the begins at 5:45 p.m. Saturday's feature is the

$200,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes, which is a stepping stone to this year's Grade 3,

$1 million Delta Downs Jackpot. The 6-5 morning line favorite for the Jean

Lafitte is Grade 2 Sanford Stakes winner Bern Identity from the barn of Kelly

Breen.
