Main Sequence on course for UN title defense
|
Dual Eclipse Award winner Main Sequence (Aldebaran) will return to Monmouth Park and defend his title in the United Nations S. (G1) in his next start on July 5 going 1 3/8 miles on the turf. Last seen finishing seventh in the March 28 Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE-G1), the Niarchos Family homebred turned in his first work back on Friday, touring a half-mile in :50 3/5 over a fast main track at Fair Hill. "We've been very conservative with him since coming back from Dubai," trainer Graham Motion said. "He shipped well and handled it well. I could have breezed him three or four weeks ago, but we're taking our time and will try and plot the same path we did last year." The 2014 Horse of the Year finalist started his path in the United States last year at Monmouth, where he scored a victory over Twilight Eclipse (Purim) by a neck in the UN, starting a four-race, all Grade 1s, win streak, capping it off with a win in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1).

Main Sequence started off 2015 with a win in the Mac Diarmida (G2) at
Gulfstream Park in February. In the Sheema Classic at Meydan, he
was three wide the entire race and uncharacteristically close to the pace,
considering his come from behind style, and finished seventh.
"We thought about running him on Belmont S. (G1) Day, but we're just
going to stick with what worked for us last year,"
Motion added.
The United Nations is one of two Grade 1 races run at Monmouth, along with the $1
million Haskell Invitational on August 2.
