Meche injured in spill at Fair Grounds
Jockey Donnie Meche sustained an injury to his left hand when he was thrown
from his mount in Sunday's 3RD race at Fair Grounds.
Meche fell on his left hand and wrist when MERCANTILE (Golden Missile) broke
down near the three-sixteenths pole. Meche, who was transported to Tulane
Medical Center for X-rays, took off his four remaining mounts on Sunday's program.
The Rayne, Louisiana, native entered Sunday tied for 10th in Fair Grounds'
jockey standings with 18 wins. Meche, 33, won the 2001 Louisiana Derby (G2)
aboard Fifty Stars and has a pair of wins in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), most
recently aboard Lady Tak in 2003.
The four-year-old Mercantile, who was a $2 million Fasig-Tipton February
two-year-old purchase, fractured his left front ankle and was euthanized.
