Keeneland's 2013 September Yearling Sale continued its ascension on Sunday as

both the session and cumulative numbers surpassed last year's figures yet again.

The sixth day of the auction in Lexington, Kentucky, showed an increase in

gross when 290 yearlings were purchased for $28,229,100, which was 30.5 percent

higher than last year's corresponding session that saw 281 horses bought for

$21,625,000. The $97,341 average has risen 26.5 percent over the 2012 average of

$76,957, and the median has jumped 33.3 percent, from $60,000 to $80,000.

Cumulatively thus far, 1,116 yearlings have brought a total $216,922,000, a

$194,375 average and a $145,000 median. Those numbers represent increases of

20.3 percent, 32.8 percent and 45 percent, respectively, over this point in 2012

when 1,232 horses sold for a gross $180,269,000, an average of $146,322 and a

median of $100,000.

Roy Jackson's Lael Stable went to $385,000 to secure Hip No. 1397, a Medaglia

d'Oro colt, and top the sixth session on Sunday.

Consigned by Anderson Farms, agent, the dark bay colt is the first registered

foal out of the winning Loving Vindication (Vindication). His second dam is

Grade 3 heroine Chimichurri (Elusive Quality), who is a half-sister to Group

3-placed listed scorer Huambo (Green Dancer) as well as the dams of multiple

Group 1-placed listed victor Quick Hawk (Spend a Buck) and Grade 2-placed stakes

diva Valli With a Vow (Broken Vow).

The session topper's fourth dam is dual stakes-placed Homespun (Round Table),

who produced Italian and Irish highweight Mashaallah and Grade 1 queen Folk Art,

both by Nijinsky II. Homespun's descendents also include Japanese champion

Eishin Champ (Mi Cielo) and Group 1 star Local Talent (Northern Dancer).

The Ontario-bred colt was born March 29, 2012.

Hip 1372, a colt from the first crop of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver out

of the winning Karla's Number (Polish Numbers), brought $360,000 from Shortleaf

Stable to be the second-highest priced yearling sold on Sunday.

The Kentucky-bred chestnut is a grandson of dual stakes heroine Whow

(Spectacular Bid), making his third dam stakes winner Hooplah (Hillary). That

mare found true fame in the breeding shed as the ancestress of numerous graded

scorers. Among her offspring are champion Phone Chatter (Phone Trick); Grade 1

scorers In Lingerie (Empire Make) and Dixie Chatter (Dixie Union); and Grade

1-winning sire Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor).

the Hidden Brook, agent for Spendthrift Farm LLC, consignment.

The Hard Spun colt, born May 6 in Kentucky, was produced by the winning Teruko (Coronado's Quest),

of the Cat). The duo's granddam is Willa Joe (El Gran Senor), who foaled Grade 3

diva Willa on the Move (Two Punch), and their third dam is Grade 3-placed stakes

heroine Willamae (Tentam).

Willamae was responsible for Will's Way (Easy Goer), hero of the 1996

Met Mile (G1) star Tizway (Tiznow).

The gavel fell at $335,000 for Hip 1633, a colt by Smart Strike out of the

unraced Bethan (Giant's Causeway). Calumet Farm signed the ticket on the St.

George Sales, agent, consignee who was foaled April 19, 2012.

The Florida-bred's dam is a half-sister Grade 1-winning leading sire Hard

Spun (Danzig). Most notably, his fourth dam is a half-sibling to champion and

1963 Kentucky Derby winner Chateaugay as well as champion and Broodmare of the

Year Primonetta, who are both by Swaps. This female line also includes champion

Little Current (*Sea-Bird) and multiple Grade 1 victress Prayers'n Promises

(Foolish Pleasure).

Sunday's seller bettered his previous auction trip when going for $85,000 as

a Keeneland November weanling.

The highest-priced filly on Sunday sold late in the day when Hip 1708 exited

the ring following a $320,000 winning offer from Bob Baffert, agent. Consigned

by Paramount Sales, agent, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Lookin at Lucky is out

of Elissa Beethoven (Royal Academy) and counts as half-siblings Grade 3 heroine

Golden Sonata (Mr. Prospector), stakes-placed Le Chateau (Chester House) and the

dam of this year's Calder Oaks victress Street Girl (Street Hero).

The February 28-foaled filly's second dam is multiple Grade 1-placed Pass a

Glance (Buckpasser), from whom is descended a number of graded/group winners

including top sire and French highweight Hernando. Pass a Glance is also a

half-sister to the dam of Grade 1 winner Palace Music (The Minstrel) as well as

Grade 1 queen Prize Spot and Grade 1-placed Little Look, both by Little Current.

Sunday's top filly only brought $45,000 as a Keeneland November weanling.

Not long after, Hip 1723 also saw a top bid of $320,000 from Fox Hill Farm,

Tom McGreevy, agent. The bay colt by Candy Ride is out of the winning Extra

Sharp (Cherokee Run), making seven-time Grade 1 heroine Sharp Cat (Storm Cat)

his second dam.

Born in Kentucky on March 16, 2012, the colt's third dam is Broodmare of the

Year In Neon (Ack Ack). In addition to Sharp Cat, that mare also produced

multiple Grade/Group 1 king and sire Royal Anthem (Theatrical) as well as

Thoroughbred Holdings LLC.

Born February 24, 2012, to Go Go Burns (Storm Cat), the Kentucky-bred gray is
