Larry Best's OXO Equine LLC was the leading bidder at $1 million for a Medaglia d'Oro filly, which topped Tuesday's Fasig-Tipton July Selected Yearling Sale at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky.
Arriving in the ring near the sale's end as Hip No. 290, the February 25-foaled miss easily eclipsed the earlier session high of $310,000. Consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent, the Kentucky-bred is out of the stakes-winning Hung the Moon, by Malibu Moon.
The seven-figure yearling helped produce increases across the board for the sale. At the end of trading, Fasig-Tipton reported 172 yearlings having sold for $16,107,000, an increase of 2.2 percent over last year when 183 horses brought $15,756,500. The average was up 8.8 percent, from $86,101 to $93,645, while the median rose 16.7 percent, from $60,000 to $70,000.
Hip 194, from the second crop of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb, sold for $310,000 to trainer Kenny McPeek, agent for Fern Circle. The February 29 Kentucky-bred was consigned by Gainesway, agent.
Reared by Aurora Prospect, by Arch, the colt is from the extended family of French champion and leading sire Caerleon and the multiple Grade 1 winner Scan. He previously sold for $55,000 at the Keeneland January sale earlier this year.
Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds obtained an Into Mischief colt for $300,000. Hip 235 is a Kentucky-bred consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.
Out of Diamond Fancy Free, by Cherokee Run, the February 17 foal counts as his second dam the multiple stakes winner Freddie Frisson, who reared multiple Grade 1 winner and sire First Samurai. This is the extended family of Grade 1 winners Jeranimo and A Huevo.
