Mezzo tops Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale

MEZZO (Broad Brush), a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Indian Charlie (In

Excess [Ire]), sold for the top price of $90,000 to Machmer Hall/Siena Farm at

Monday's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Winter Mixed Sale in Timonium, Maryland. The

four-year-old filly, Hip No. 84, was consigned by Bill Reightler, agent.

Mezzo, who was cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect, is out of

multiple Grade 3 winner Soviet Sojourn (Leo Castelli).

At three, Indian Charlie won the Santa Anita Derby (G1) before finishing

third in the Kentucky Derby (G1) in what turned out to be his final career

start. He retired to the breeding shed with a record of 5-4-0-1, $616,120.

Stakes-placed KRIS IS IT (Kris S.) was the highest-priced broodmare, selling

for $45,000 to Four Green Fields. The 12-year-old mare was cataloged in foal to

Touch Gold on an April 30 cover and was consigned by Double R Consignment, agent

for Blossom Racing Stable.

Sold as Hip 65, Kris Is It is the dam of stakes-placed Wise Investor (Belong to Me).

She is a half-sister to stakes winners Select Green (Capote) and Outrigger

(Gulch) and out of Grade 2-placed Damewood (Majesty's Prince).

A total of 65 horses sold for $444,800, a 75.7 percent increase compared to a

year ago when 45 horses realized $253,200. The average price jumped 21.6

percent, from $5,627 to $6,843, while the median price remained unchanged at

$4,000.
