Millionreasonswhy proved best in her sophomore debut at Laurel Park

(Maryland Jockey Club/Jim McCue)

Sagamore Farm's Millionreasonswhy made her sophomore bow

a winning one on Saturday when capturing the $77,750 Wide Country Stakes at

Laurel Park by 1 1/4 lengths with jockey Horacio Karamanos in the irons.

The bay

miss went ran three wide around the turn after stalking the pace on the

backstretch, grabbed command on the outside of 4-5 favorite Dance to Bristol

(Speightstown) and drew off under a hand ride to complete seven furlongs on the

good dirt in 1:24.

Trained by Ignacio Correas IV, Millionreasonswhy was made the

even-money second choice in this contest off a more than six-month break. She

broke her maiden by four lengths last June in an off-the-turf contest at

Colonial Downs before shipping to Belmont Park to add a two-length score in the

Grade 2 Matron Stakes to her record.

The Grand Slam filly just missed when second by a neck

to eventual Eclipse Award winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine My

Miss Aurelia in the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes, and hasn't been seen in

competition since that August 14 event at Saratoga.

"She's never run more than 6 1/2 (furlongs) before," Correas said. "She

lost to My Miss Aurelia in a very hurting defeat at Saratoga. We were looking

for seven-eighths to start her back. She was doing awesome, every morning. Dance

to Bristol was a tough cookie to beat."

two

blistering

workouts

at

Laurel

last

month,

with Karamanos

in

the

irons,

as

preparation

for

her

2012

debut.

"She

is

working

so

good

in

the

mornings," Karamanos

said.

"The

only

instructions

were

to

let

her

relax

in

the

first

part,

let

the

filly

run,

if

she

gets

tired

don't

hit

her

too

much.

She

needs

the

race,

but

she

runs

like

she

did

not

need

the

race.

At

the

quarter-pole

I

asked

her

to

go

and

she

ran

big."

Correas

indicated

his

star

would

likely

make

her

in

the

Grade 3

Comely

Stakes

going

a

mile at

Aqueduct

on

April

with

the

Grade

1, $1

million

Kentucky

Oaks

on

May

4 as

the

ultimate

goal.

"I

think

that

she

is a

one

of a

kind

and

I'm

lucky

to

have

something

like

that

in

my

hands,"

Correas

remarked.

"I

always

thought

she

was

something

very

special

and

I am

glad

she

is

back.

It

is

very

nice

to

see

she

is

still

the

same

kind

of

horse

she

was

at

two

because

some

don't

make

the

natural

progression

at

three.

"We

are

going

to

do

this

step-by-step.

The

Comely

is a

mile

and

if

it

goes

the

way

it

should

then

we'll

point

to

the

Oaks.

That

doesn't

mean

she

has

to

win

but

she

finished

good

today

and

was

able

to

relax

which

will

help

me

prepare

for

the

next

start."

Karamanos

and

Correas

are

both

natives

of

Argentina

and

have

been

friends

for

more

than

25

years.

"I

have

known

him

since

I

was

a

kid

so I

am

so

happy

to

win

races

for

him," Karamanos

added.

With this win now under her

girth, Millionreasonswhy has accumulated $178,340 in earnings to go along with

her 4-3-1-0 mark.
