Trainer Michael Matz sent a pair of distaffers up from Fair Hill to contest

Sunday's Grade 2, $295,952

Canadian

Stakes at Woodbine, and they plundered the spoils as Northern Bloodstock's

Minakshi held off stablemate Colonial Flag by a half-length. Under Luis

Contreras, the French-bred earned her first career stakes victory as well as an

automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

The Matz trainees were overlooked in the wagering, with Minakshi leaving the

gate as the 7-1 fifth choice and Colonial Flag going off at 10-1. The winner

rewarded her supporters with $16.20, and the Matz exactor was good for $113.60.

As expected, Arlington shipper La Tia zoomed to the early lead through an

opening quarter in :23 2/5. English invader Ladys First also showed speed,

however, and moved through along the inside to take over. Meanwhile, Contreras

had Minakshi settled in a ground-saving spot behind horses in sixth, and

Colonial Flag was unhurried at the tail of the field.

La Tia regained the advantage from Ladys First on the far turn and entered

the stretch with a tenuous lead, but the closers were fanning out to deliver

their challenges. Minakshi rolled up on the outside and struck the front, only

to find Colonial Flag rallying boldly herself. But Minakshi capitalized on

getting first run and completed about 1 1/8 miles on the firm turf in 1:44.

"I got a nice staking trip," Contreras said. "My filly relaxed really nicely

for me. Michael (Matz) told me in the morning that the horse can be on the lead

but she relaxes better and she relaxed for me nice. I just angled outside in the

quarter-pole and she just gave me everything and I got more horse at the end."

"She had a wonderful trip up," assistant trainer Joy Cooper said. "She's a

bit of a quirky filly, so you got to be really patient with her. She has to have

the pony in the paddock and you just hope everything goes her way because the

switch can flip and she can lose it, so it is more so just trying to let things

go her way."

Moment of Majesty closed for third, another 1 3/4 lengths back. La Tia, Ladys

First, No Explaining, Pure Blue Sky, 2-1 favorite Solid Appeal and recent French

import Meri Shika rounded out the order of finish.

Minakshi now sports a mark of 18-5-2-3, $339,507. Originally trained in

France by Pascal Bary, the Footstepsinthesand mare won three straight as a

sophomore in 2011 -- a maiden at Saint-Malo and conditions races at Deauville

and Fontainebleau. Her skein was halted when she finished a close third in a

handicap at Longchamp. Minakshi had a tougher time as a four-year-old, but

finally came around last fall. After capturing a conditions event at

Maisons-Laffitte, she made her stakes debut in the Prix Isola Bella at Chantilly

and missed by a neck.

Imported to the United States for her five-year-old campaign, Minakshi

finished a strong second in the May 1 Owsley at Belmont in her first try for

Matz. She went on to run well in her three ensuing starts, checking in third in

the May 25 Sheepshead Bay, fourth in the June 29 New York, and third in the July

28 Matchmaker at Monmouth, before scoring her breakthrough at Woodbine.

Bred by Elevage Haras de Bourgeauville, Minakshi is out of the stakes-placed

Machiavellian mare Maria de la Luz, who is also responsible for stakes-winning

French hurdler Marble Garden. Minakshi's second dam is the winning Lyphard mare

Light of Hope, a full sister to Group 3-winning sire Alzao. This is also the

family of Australian Group 1 heroines Arapaho Miss and Vouvray and Grade 1 queen

Toga Toga Toga.

Minakshi's fourth dam is Broodmare of the Year Pocahontas, famous for

producing champion Tom Rolfe and multiple stakes star Chieftain, both noted

sires.

His Race to Win earned his first stakes victory in the Ontario Derby

One race following the Canadian, Sam-Son Farms' homebred His Race to Win

lived up to his name in the Grade 3, $166,038

Ontario Derby by an easy 2 1/4 lengths.

Jockey Eurico Da Silva kept the Stormy Atlantic sophomore in a ground-saving

spot on the inside as B E Boston Strong set the pace through splits of :25 1/5,

:50 2/5 and 1:14 3/5. Winning Cause, the near 6-5 favorite, stuck his head in

front during the stretch run, but His Race to Win finally found a seam and burst

from between rivals to take over and draw off in a final time of 1:50 3/5 for

nine Polytrack furlongs.

Da Silva admitted to being worried about the traffic

trouble as the field turned for home.

"It worked out perfect but I was really

worried," Da Silva remarked. "I had so much horse in the turn and had nowhere to

go, but I'm glad they opened a hole there for me. My horse was there just

waiting for that moment."

His Race to Win earned his second straight victory, having captured an

allowance on August 10 over the synthetic track by two lengths. Now 3-3-2 from

11 career races, the Malcolm Pierce-trained bay has accumulated $293,224 in

lifetime earnings.
