Six distaffers will square off in the $200,000 Modesty H. (G3), which serves
as a prep for the Beverly D. S. (G1) on August 8. Grade 1 winner PURE CLAN (Pure
Prize) made her 2009 debut in the 1 1/16-mile Mint Julep H. (G3) last out,
rallying strongly to be a neck second, and she figures to appreciate the added
ground in Saturday's 1 3/16-mile event. Conditioned by Bob Holthus, the
four-year-old miss notched a 112 BRIS Late Pace rating in her tightener, and
she's trained forwardly since that start on June 6. Julien Leparoux will be
reunited with the talented chestnut, who we believe will move forward off her
seasonal debut with a victory.
TIZAQUEENA (Tiznow), a near 9-1 winner of the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (G2)
two starts back for Michael Stidham, couldn't sustain her speed in the Mint
Julep last time, weakening to a well-beaten third, but she looms as a lone speed
here and could last a long way under E.T. Baird. The four-year-old filly will be
tested by the extended distance, but she's as honest as they come (7-5-1-1) and
we'll use her on the bottom of the exacta.
DYNAFORCE (Dynaformer) posted a nice score over yielding turf in the Flower
Bowl Invitational (G1) last fall and would prefer ground with some cut in it on
Saturday. Fifth as the odds-on choice when making her 2009 bow in the Gallorette
H. (G3) last out, the Bill Mott-trained mare is eligible to improve off that
effort and will pick up the services of Robby Albarado, but she's been far from
consistent, winning only once in six starts since being imported from France.
We'll tab her for a minor award.
COLINA VERDE (Brz) (Know Heights [Ire]), a multiple Group 1 winner in Brazil,
opened her U.S. racing career with an allowance win but has dropped four
straight starts since then, registering a fourth in the Sheepshead Bay (G2) most
recently. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee will look to offer a rally from off the
pace here, but we can't recommend her chances.
LEMONETTE (Lemon Drop Kid) steps up off decent showings versus allowance
types at Churchill, and we'll give her a race against U.S. stakes rivals. CIAO
(Lear Fan) is winless in five starts over Arlington's turf and probably won't be
effective at this distance.
