Monmouth BC Oaks
After heavy post-time favorite Culinary (El Amante) stumbled at the start of Sunday's $200,000 Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks (G3), Richard and Nancy Kaster's FLYING GLITTER (Glitterman) went straight for the lead and never looked back en route to a gate-to-wire victory, getting 1 1/16 miles over the fast Monmouth track in 1:44 3/5. The Ronny Werner-trained miss won her third in a row with this score and improved her overall mark to 9-4-1-2 with earnings of $243,051. Under Elvis Trujillo, the dark bay sophomore set moderate splits of :24 1/5, :47 4/5 and 1:11 3/5 all while under a rating hold. Culinary, behind the leader in second, began to fade after three quarters and it was Shebelongstoyou (Belong to Me) who took over tracking duties but was still 2 1/2 lengths back after a mile in 1:37 3/5. Through the lane, Flying Glitter was full of run when asked and increased her margin of victory, crossing the wire 3 3/4 lengths in front. Shebelongstoyou held second, a length clear of Toll Taker (Bernstein), who raced in third for the majority of the contest. "Around the quarter pole I looked back and it didn't look like anyone was coming," Trujillo said. "We cut the corner for home and she was still running pretty comfortably. From there it was all over." The winner paid $16.60, $8.20 and $5.40 at 7-1 while starting healthy exotics of $69.80 (exacta) and $519.40 (trifecta). Shebelongstoyou returned a nice $6.80 and $5.60 for the place, while Toll Taker gave back $6 to show at nearly 9-1. Culinary finished another 5 3/4 lengths back in fourth, completing the $1 superfecta (5-6-3-1) good for $421.90, and was followed by Golden Locket (Storm Creek), Bayou Breeze (A.P. Indy) and Merrill Gold (Gold Fever).
