New Group 2 to be held at York

Officials at York racecourse Tuesday announced that there will be an

additional group race run on the Knavesmire this year known as the York S.

(Eng-G2) Replacing the banished Scottish Derby (Eng-G2) previously run at Ayr,

the 10-furlong £100,000 contest will be for

three-year-olds and up July 29.

"This is a brand new race over the same distance as the (August 22) Juddmonte

International (Eng-G1)," Marketing Manager James Brennan commented. "It is

designed to fit horses looking for a run between the Eclipse S. (Eng-G1) (at

Sandown on July 8) and International and we're delighted to secure it."

As expected, York will also stage the September 8-9 Ladbrokes St Leger

Festival, which has been transferred from Doncaster due to that track's

redevelopment. This year's Juddmonte International will boast a total purse of

£500,000, with total prize money reaching

over £5.5 million thanks to the additional

St Leger meeting.
