Newsdad earned his first stakes victory with a two-length decision in

Saturday's Grade 2, $142,500

Pan

American Stakes, scoring as the 3-5 favorite in a scratch-depleted field of

four. The four-year-old colt completed 1 1/2 miles in 2:24 4/5 over the

Gulfstream Park firm turf.

Julien Leparoux had the mount for trainer Bill Mott.

Newsdad rated at the back of the compact field, within a few lengths of

pacesetter Harrods Creek, who showed the through fractions of :25, :49, 1:13 1/5

and 1:37. Simmard advanced to the lead on the far turn, but Newsdad was beginning

to find his best stride and surged to the front entering the stretch drive. The

winner comfortably held sway in the final furlong.

Hailstone rallied to edge Simmard by a neck for second, and it was a 9

1/2-length margin back to Harrods Creek in fourth. Cause of Freedom and Center

Divider were withdrawn.

By Arch, Newsdad was bred in Kentucky by owner James S. Karp and is out of

the unraced Pulpit mare Storm Tracer. The nine-year-old mare is a half-sister to

stakes winner and Grade 3 runner-up Field Cat; and stakes victor Estevan.

Newsdad placed in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes and the Victoria Park Stakes

and also finished fourth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes last season. The dark

bay opened 2012 with a 6 3/4-length romp over allowance/optional claiming rivals

and entered the Pan American off a nose second in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida

Stakes. With Saturday's $90,000 payday, Newsdad has now earned $323,140 from a

15-4-2-3 line.
