Nijinsky attracts former German Derby

winner

Sunday's C$200,000

Nijinsky

(Can-G2) at Woodbine will have a dose of international flavor to it,

specifically the German imports Lucky Speed (Silvano) and Letro (Montjeu).

The five-year-old Lucky Speed is easily the more accomplished of the two. The

five-year-old kicked off his career in 2013 going three-for-four, highlighted by

a victory in the German Derby (Ger-G1) at Hamburg. However, he was out of action

nearly 11 months after that classic win, and failed to win in four starts last

season.

Third in the Grosser Preis von Berlin (Ger-G1) last August, Lucky Speed has

not started since September 7. Top German jockey Andrasch Starke will be in to

ride.

Letro figures to have a tougher time of it in the Nijinsky having not risen

above the handicap ranks in his native land. His only prior stakes attempt, at a

French provincial track, resulted in a sixth-place effort last November.

The remainder of the field for the nine-furlong grass event are all

locally-based runners. Are You Kidding Me (Run Away and Hide), a Grade 3 winner

on turf at Delaware Park two years ago, enters off a 1 1/2-length score in the

Eclipse (Can-G2) on the Polytrack June 7.

Third that day was Za Approval (Ghostzapper), the multiple Grade 3 veteran

who was second in the 2013 Woodbine Mile (Can-G1) and fifth in the 2014 Nijinsky

in two prior trips over the E.P. Taylor turf course. His Race to Win (Stormy

Atlantic), last year's Seagram Cup (Can-G3) winner, trailed the Eclipse field of

five in his season debut.

Other notable include Platinum Glory (Dunkirk), second in the King Edward

(Can-G2) last time, and Grade 2 veteran Excaper (Exchange Rate), fourth in the

King Edward and Connaught Cup (Can-G2) in his last two.
