Not for Love is Maryland's best

NOT FOR LOVE (Mr. Prospector) was the leading sire nationally

not based in Kentucky in 2003 and is the only Maryland-based stallion

ranked among the leading 75 sires this year by earnings (21st

overall). He was well represented over the Holiday Weekend by

Iowa Oaks (G3) winner He Loves Me and Skip Away S. hero

Presidentialaffair, who established a new track record at

Monmouth Park when completing a mile and 70 yards in 1:38.85.

The 14-year-old stallion owns a regal pedigree as a son of

Grade 1 winner Dance Number, who was out of champion Numbered

Account and is a half-sister to the outstanding Private Account.

Dance Number's first registered foal was Oscillate, dam of stakes

winner and sire Mutakddim and the Grade 1-placed Smooth Charmer.

Next came champion Rhythm, winner of

1989 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and the 1990 Travers S. (G1).

Dance Number also produced Grade 3 winner Get Lucky, dam of Grade 1 runner-up

Offbeat and Grade

3 hero and sire Accelerator.

Not for Love was a useful racehorse, placing in one stakes

race and earning $178,870 from a 29-6-7-5 mark, but he's had much

more impact at stud. His first crop featured Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2)

and Ben Ali S. (G3) victor Duckhorn, six-time stakes winner

Shopping for Love, three-time stakes heroine Maddie May and

Michael's Pride, winner of the Maryland Million Sprint H.

More recent offspring have included Touch Love, winner of the

2001 Schuylerville S. (G2), Grade 3 queen For Rubies and Canadian

Grade 3 winner Sheila's Prospect. Last October, he was

represented by three different stakes winners on one afternoon.

From six crops to race, Not for Love has sired a total of 25

stakes winners. He throws precocious two-year-olds (20 percent

first-time win), horses who excel on off tracks (21 percent win

clip) and owns a respectable 13 percent win rate on the turf with

his progeny.

He Loves Me, a three-time listed winner this year in Maryland,

made her graded bow in Friday's Iowa Oaks and closed strongly to

win going away for trainer Richard Small. The three-year-old

filly's career line reads 10-6-1-1.

Presidentialaffair captured last year's Stuyvesant H. (G3) at

Aqueduct and earned his first stakes victory this season with a 7

3/4-length tally in Monday's Skip Away. Trained by Martin Ciresa,

the five-year-old owns a record of 17-7-5-1.

Not for Love stands at Northview Stallion Station near

Chesapeake City, Maryland, for a $20,000 fee.
