Oak Tree Derby attracts 11
French Group 3 winner ASPERITY (War Chant) and Del Mar Derby (G2) runner-up
AUGMENT (Aptitude) highlight a field of 11 three-year-olds entered in Saturday's
$150,000 Oak Tree Derby (G2) at Santa Anita. Multiple stakes victor STONESIDE (Ire) (Marchand
de Sable), runner-up to French Derby (Fr-G1) hero Lawman in
the Prix Jean Prat (Fr-G1) but unplaced when making his U.S. debut as the 6-5
favorite in the Del Mar Derby last out, is another top contender in the 1
1/8-mile turf test.
Asperity defeated Stoneside when capturing the Prix Paul de Moussac (Fr-G3) in June,
but finished behind that same rival when sixth in the Prix Jean Prat. The John
Gosden pupil will make his U.S. debut under new rider Alex Solis. Irish maiden
winner ANGELONMYSHOULDER (GB) (King's Best), now trained by Neil Drysdale, will
also make his first U.S. appearance in the Oak Tree Derby.
KARAZI (Swi) (Arazi), a fast-closing fifth when
making his stateside bow in the La Jolla H. (G2), is also in the line-up.
UNUSUAL SUSPECT (Unusual Heat) and TEN A PENNY (Gulch), the respective one-two
finishers in the recent Bay Meadows Derby, merit respect. The latter captured
the first division of the Oceanside S. at Del Mar.
STAR INSIDE (Ire) (Key of Luck) will lead the call to the post under G.F.
Almeida. Next comes Karazi, Brice Blanc; Asperity; Unusual Suspect, Joe Talamo;
DAYTONA (Ire) (Indian Ridge), Mike Smith; MOSTACOLLI MORT (Hold for Gold), Tyler
Baze; Stoneside, Victor Espinoza; Ten a Penny, Michael Baze; Augment, Richard
Migliore; Angelonmyshoulder, David Flores; and SENIOR (Arch), Martin Garcia.
Asperity will carry 122 pounds, the rest tote 118.
The $60,000
Chant S. will be offered on the undercard. STORM MILITARY (Arg) (Bernstein),
a multiple Group 1 Argentinean winner who is now trained by Bobby Frankel, will
make his first U.S. start in the one-mile turf event. Other contenders in the
10-horse field include Grade 2 victor TOASTED (Hennessy); American Invitational
H. (G2) third and multiple Grade 1-placed FAST AND FURIOUS (Fr) (Singspiel
[Ire]); and MACDUFF (GB) (Machiavellian), who exits a third in the Bay Meadows
Breeders' Cup H. (G3).
