Our Edge romps in Barbaro
As soon as Robert V. LaPenta's OUR EDGE (The Cliff's Edge) outsprinted the
field from post 9, adroitly angled over to the rail, and settled down to dictate
on the front end, Sunday's $152,100
S. (G3) was effectively over. The Nick Zito sophomore proceeded to romp by
seven lengths at Delaware Park, extending his winning streak to three and
becoming the first graded stakes victor for his sire.
Our Edge strode along well within himself while posting splits of :23 3/5,
:47 4/5 and 1:12 3/5, conserving more than enough energy for the stretch drive.
Pitched Perfectly (Pleasantly Perfect), sporting the Lael Stable colors made
famous by Barbaro, attempted to keep pace in second, but began to retreat
entering the far turn. Meanwhile, 2-1 favorite It Happened Again (Proud Citizen)
tried to take a run at Our Edge, but the winner had not yet been asked a serious
question.
Alan Garcia gave Our Edge the cue turning for home, and the handsome bay
stretched clear in style. After opening up by 2 1/2 lengths in midstretch and
clocking 1:37 2/5 for the mile, he continued to pour it on inside the final
sixteenth. Our Edge crossed the wire a dominating winner in a final time of 1:43
3/5 for 1 1/16 miles on the fast track. The nearly 7-2 second choice returned
$8.80, $4.40 and $3.60 while keying the $30.80 exacta, $135.20 trifecta and $595
superfecta (9-3-2-4).
It Happened Again wound up best of the rest by 1 1/4 lengths, paying $3.80
and $2.80. Fellow pace tracker Denver (Fusaichi Pegasus) ran evenly in third, 2
3/4 lengths clear of Sumo (Fusaichi Pegasus). Show was good for $3.60 at 6-1. In
the Juice (Rock Slide) reported home fifth, followed by Code of Honour (Omega
Code), Doc's Friend (Friend's Lake), Sudden Shift (Toccet), Pitched Perfectly,
Dumar (Maria's Mon) and Slew of Smoke (Black Mambo). Bunker Hill (Trippi) was
scratched.
Our Edge, who only just broke his maiden on May 18, now sports a mark of
5-3-1-0, $162,500. Sixth in his debut at Gulfstream Park in February, he was a
battling second in a Florida-bred maiden at that track the following month. Our
Edge earned his first victory in devastating fashion, wiring the field by 8 3/4
lengths going one mile at Delaware. He employed the same tactics when tackling
stakes rivals next time out in the Coronado's Quest S. at Monmouth, where he
held on gamely by a head.
Bred by Terrapin Stables and Phillip and Marcia Cohen in the Sunshine State,
Our Edge was a $25,000 Keeneland November weanling who went on to fetch $130,000
as a Keeneland September yearling. He is out of the stakes-winning Cash the
Flash (Star de Naskra), making him a half-brother to the juvenile filly She
Wants Cash (Closing Argument), who finished third at Lone Star on May 21; a
yearling filly named Cash Arrangement (Storm Passage); and a 2009 filly by
Leestown. Cash the Flash is a half-sister to four stakes winners, including
multiple stakes scorer De La Concorde (Inverness Drive). Our Edge's third dam,
Reckoning (Olden Times), is a full sister to Roving Boy, the champion
two-year-old male of 1982. This is also the family of multiple Grade 1 heroine A
Wild Ride (Wild Again).
