Out of Gwedda easily wins Tremont
Despite stumbling badly at the start, Pegasus Dream Stable's OUT OF GWEDDA
(Out of Place) easily went on to win Tuesday's $101,200 Tremont S. at Belmont
Park. Jockey John Velazquez took a hold of the chestnut, then stalked the early
pace from the outside before easily drawing off to a 2 1/4-length victory in the
114th running of the Tremont. The colt, trained by Todd Pletcher, completed the
5 1/2-furlong distance in 1:06 3/5 on a fast track and paid $2.40 and $2.10 as
the prohibitive 1-5 favorite.
"When you're a big favorite like that, you always fear something going wrong
at the start," Pletcher said. "Luckily, he was good enough to overcome it. He's
a pretty quick colt and with a cleaner break, probably would have been right on
the lead."
Velazquez said the colt recovered quickly from the incident.
"He broke and the second jump, he just disappeared," the rider explained. "He
got up, I gave him a little slap and he just started running. I just sat against
him and he responded."
Gonzo Bonzo Beans (Prospect Bay) set the opening pace and held on well for
runner-up honors, six lengths clear of Pride of Seattle (Slew City Slew), who
was in the mix early. Gonzo Bonzo Beans returned $2.90 to place. There was no
show wagering. The $2 exacta (3-4) paid $4.80. Superstar Lebo (Kelly Kip), who
also stumbled leaving the gate, ran at the back of the four-horse field
throughout.
Out of Gwedda broke his maiden by six lengths in his debut at Belmont Park on
May 5, running five furlongs in :56 3/5 on a fast track. He is now perfect in
two starts with $89,520 in earnings.
"Right now, we're probably going to run Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) in the
Sanford (S. [G2] on July 27 at Saratoga) and probably run this colt back in the
Saratoga Special (Breeders' Cup S. [G2] on August 17 at Saratoga)," Pletcher
said.
Out of Gwedda was listed as sold for $100,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales
Company's March Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He previously sold for $52,000
at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The Kentucky-bred is out of
Gwedda (Gone West), a stakes-placed winner of $98,615, who has a yearling filly
by Boundary.
