Pair of $40,000 fillies lead way at Barretts Winter Mixed

Juvenile filly HOLY SCRIPT (Holy Bull) and a yearling filly by Candy Ride

(Arg) each brought $40,000 at Monday's first session of the Barretts January

Mixed Sale in Pomona, California. Holy Script, offered as Hip No. 98 by H & E

Ranch, was purchased by Dr. Mikel C. Harrington, agent. The yearling, consigned

by Grant Hofmans, agent for The Craig Family Trust's reduction, was gaveled down

to Walnut Hill Stables after touring the ring as Hip 244.

Holy Script, a Kentucky-bred daughter of the stakes-placed Marquise Miss (Marquetry),

is a full sister to stakes winner Miss Tizzy (Cee's Tizzy). Marquise Miss is

herself a a half-sister to the Illinois-bred stakes winner Tenpointfive (Richter

Scale). This female line has produced 1972 English champion juvenile colt Noble

Decree (*Vaguely Noble) and 1991 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Strike the Gold

(Alydar).

The Candy Ride filly, who was bred in California, is out of the winning

Chapeau (Deputy Minister), a daughter of Italian highweight and multiple Grade 1

winner Alpride (Ire) (Alzao), whose signature victories occurred in the 1995

editions of the Beverly Hills H. (G1) and Yellow Ribbon Invitational (G1). This

is the family of Grade/Group 2 winners Prize Giving (GB) (Most Welcome [GB]) and

Bronze Cannon (Lemon Drop Kid)

The opening session of the two-day sale saw 148 horses sold for $1,233,600,

for an average of $8,335 and a median of $4,500. Those figures compare favorably

to last year's single-session sale, when 202 head brought $1,232,400, for an

average of $6,101 and a median of $3,600. While gross revenue was virtually

even, the average and median jumped 36.6 percent and 25 percent, respectively.

The sale was to conclude Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. (PST).
