Twelve turf runners will square off in Saturday's $150,000 Pan American H.
(G3) at Gulfstream, and we'll give the edge to HOTSTUFANTHENSOME (Awesome
Again). The seven-year-old gelding has been racing at shorter distances in his
last five starts, but he did record an excellent win at 1 3/8 miles last year at
Gulfstream when capturing the Mac Diarmida H. (G3). The Norman Pointer runner
will enter this race off a very sharp effort, taking the Tampa Bay Breeders' Cup
S. in his seasonal bow, and we loved his form last year when he finished second
against the likes of Ashkal Way (Ire) (Ashkalani), Miesque's Approval (Miesque's
Son) and Three Valleys (Diesis [GB]) in his final three appearances. The
versatile Hotstufanthensome could prove impossible to deny.
INTERPATATION (Langfuhr) hasn't received much pace in his recent attempts,
but there appears to be some speed here and we'll look for him to run big late.
A Grade 3 winner over the course, the five-year-old gelding notched a 110 BRIS
Late Pace rating last out, and his Speed numbers are also favorable. Listed at
8-1 on the morning line, Interpatation will likely offer good value, and he
appears capable of challenging in the stretch.
JAMBALAYA (Langfuhr) recorded his biggest career score when taking the
Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf S. (G1) last out and finished a good third in the
Canadian Turf H. (G3) two starts back. The Catherine Day-Phillips charge will be
making his third start of the year on Saturday, and the five-year-old gelding
must be respected. He's faltered as the favorite in the past, but Jambalaya
consistently finishes in the money and he'll probably be in the mix once again.
RAMAZUTTI (Honor Grades) can win on the lead or rating, and we'll look for
him to be up close tracking the pace in this spot. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the
five-year-old gelding has displayed an affinity for the local turf, winning this
year's Mac Diarmida H. (G2) and finishing a close second in last year's Pan
American, but we're not sure why he faltered so badly last time, finishing 11th
in the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf. We still respect his chances.
DRILLING FOR OIL (Giant's Causeway) will step up in class in good form, and
the Kenny McPeek-trained runner appears to love a route of ground. We wouldn't
be surprised to see him hit the board in his stakes debut. DYNANTONIA (Dynaformer)
will be running late for George Weaver, and the distance-loving five-year-old
deserves some consideration for a minor award.
REVVED UP (Sultry Song) was no factor when fifth in the Gulfstream Park
Breeders' Cup Turf last time, and he's unplaced in three attempts over the course.
We'll let the classy Christophe Clement runner beat us. LIMA PAPA (Unbridled's
Song) is going well presently for Richard Violette, but the front runner faces a
difficult test in his stakes bow.
PELLEGRINO (Brz) (Nugget Point [Ire]) was no match for Canadian graded rivals
in four consecutive starts last year, and we don't believe he'll do better here either. MURCH (Mr. Greeley) drew a terrible post (12) and probably needs an easier spot
to be competitive. FRI GUY (Theatrical [Ire]) turned in a decent effort on the
front end at 74-1 in the Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Turf, but he'll likely face
more pressure this time around. A. J. MELINI (Matty G) will likely add to the
pace, but he doesn't appear to have much chance at sustaining his speed.
