Last updated: 10/26/13 12:15 PM

Points Offthebench broke down while working for the Breeders' Cup Sprint at

Santa Anita on Saturday and had to be euthanized. The shocking incident left

onlookers in tears as the four-year-old gelding fractured his right front

fetlock.

Regular rider Mike Smith walked away under his own power after being tossed

to the ground. The Hall of Fame jockey was reportedly not injured.

Trained by Tim Yakteen, Points Offthebench was campaigned by Donnie Creview

and Charles V. Martin.

The California-bred earned $514,940 from a 8-6-1-1.

Points Offthebench won his last four starts, recording back to back Grade 1 victories in the

Santa Anita Sprint Championship and Bing Crosby, and was considered the likely

favorite in the Sprint.
