Pomeroy gets first winner

Multiple Grade 1 winner POMEROY (Boundary) was represented by his first

winner as a sire when his two-year-old daughter Pomeroy Girl captured a

maiden

special weight at Canterbury Downs on Saturday. Owned by Al & Bill Ulwelling

and trained by Michael Biehler, the chestnut youngster was hard sent to the lead

by jockey Ry Eikleberry and recorded a wire-to-wire, half-length decision in the

3 1/2-furlong test. The Florida-bred miss stopped the teletimer over the sloppy

track in :40 3/5.

Pomeroy was a top-class sprinter in the mid-90s, winning graded races over

three consecutive seasons, and notched his first Grade 1 victory in the 2004

King's Bishop S. (G1) at Saratoga, establishing a new stakes mark when

completing seven furlongs in 1:20 4/5. Trained for the majority of his career by Patrick Biancone, the bay horse registered a 117 BRIS Speed rating for his four-length

score in the 2005 A.G. Vanderbilt S. (G2). After being transferred to Marty

Wolfson, he raced three times at five,

recording an outstanding 2 1/4-length win in the Forego S. (G1) in his

penultimate start.

Owned by Silverleaf Farms, Pomeroy earned $845,050 from an 18-7-4-2 line over

four seasons of racing. The four-time graded stakes winner also placed in six

graded events. He was bred by Cherry Valley Farm in Kentucky, and sold for

$300,000 at the 2003 Fasig-Tipton Florida February two-year-old sale.

The nine-year-old freshman sire stands at Vinery near Summerland, Florida,

for a $5,000 fee.
