Premium Wine seeks Tom Fool toast; Looky Yonder goes for second straight
Premium Wine seeks Tom Fool toast; Looky Yonder goes for
second straight
PREMIUM WINE (Prime Timber) was no factor in his last race, the Metropolitan
Mile H. (G1) on May 26, and will look to rebound on Friday in the $200,000
H. (G2) while shortening back up to seven furlongs. The Tony Dutrow-trained
bay was a close third in the General George H. (G2) and Carter H. (G1) in his
two races prior to the Met Mile, and earned a career-best 108 BRIS Speed rating
in the Carter. The four-year-old will get a jockey switch to John Velazquez in
the Tom Fool.
Standing in the way of Premium Wine are five others, including LUCKY ISLAND
(Arg) (Lucky Roberto), who brings a three-race win streak into this event.
Conditioned by Kiaran McLaughlin, the four-year-old captured his Argentinean
debut by nine lengths, then shipped north and was well back in seventh in his
U.S. bow. Since that one, though, the dark bay hasn't tasted defeat, scoring a 2
1/4-length allowance score at Gulfstream Park, a 4 1/2-length allowance/optional
claiming victory at Aqueduct and a 2 1/4-length win at Belmont in the Bold Ruler
H. (G3) last out. Lucky Island will keep Alan Garcia in the saddle while going
for his fourth straight.
Also looking for a consecutive win is TASTEYVILLE (With Approval), who ended
2007 with a 9 1/4-length score in the seven-furlong Sport Page H. (G3). He then
opened 2008 with a 2 3/4-length victory in an allowance/optional claimer and
will have regular rider Mike Luzzi aboard.
One race prior to the Tom Fool, a field of eight distaffers will also sprint
seven furlongs in the $150,000
First Flight H. (G2). LOOKY YONDER (Johannesburg) has blossomed since coming
to New York, posting an allowance/optional claiming victory and taking the
Vagrancy H. (G2) in her past two races. She's also earned her best Speed ratings
to date, favors the distance (6-3-0-1) and will get Garrett Gomez in the irons
once more while attempting to make it three in a row.
RITE MOMENT (Vicar) is no stranger to the winner's circle, taking three
straight including the Distaff H. (G2) and Bed o' Roses H. (G2) earlier this
season. However, the Gary Contessa trainee wasn't able to get to the wire first
in the Shuvee H. (G2) last out and is looking to return to her winning ways in
this spot with Rajiv Maragh in the saddle.
