Quick Enough just that in Morvich
|
At the ripe age of six, QUICK ENOUGH (High Brite) had gone to post only 13 times prior to Monday's $100,000 H. (G3) at Oak Tree. A frequent participant in claiming events in that span, he'd been haltered three times, most recently for $40,000 out of a winning effort at Del Mar on August 15. In the Columbus Day feature, Quick Enough showed that he, too, has finally arrived with a sharp stalk-and-pounce score in the six-furlong, firm-turf feature at Hollywood Park. Tracking in second behind Lt. Hopeful (Bernstein) as that rival rattled off fractions of :22 4/5 and :45, Quick Enough waited until inside the eighth pole to make his bid and he did so easily under Pat Valenzuela to record the 1 1/2-length triumph in 1:08 2/5. Dilemma (Grand Slam), a 20-1 outsider, rallied from seventh to edge 8-5 favorite Scenic Blast (Aus) (Scenic [Ire]) by a neck for second, with that one a half-length up on 4-1 chance Afleet Ruler (Northern Afleet). The order of finish was completed by Lt. Hopeful, Connagher (In Excess [Ire]), Bradium (Forestry), Quietly Mine (Belong to Me) and Truest Legend (Songandaprayer). Tropic Storm (Stormy Atlantic) was scratched.

Quick Enough, the 5-2 second choice, paid $7.60, $4 and $2.80. Dilemma
returned $14 and $6.40, with Scenic Blast worth $2.60. The $1 exotics paid $59
(exacta), $195.10 (trifecta) and $840.70 (6-7-3-4 superfecta).
Quick Enough did not debut until October of his three-year-old year in 2007,
when he won at first asking over the Santa Anita main track for a $40,000 tag.
He would not debut on grass until the following February, which he took an
immediately liking to in beating starter allowance foes. A winner in three of
four starts in 2008, Quick Enough raced only twice in 2009, finishing third in
both, but resumed his winning ways on July 25 at Del Mar following a layoff of
nearly 15 months. He was claimed from both that win, for $32,000, and the next
for $40,000 by current owners Michael Bello, Russell Sarno and Pablo Suarez.
New trainer Doug O'Neill next ran him in Del Mar's premier grass sprint, the
Green Flash H., and the gelding responded with a dead-heat second by a nose to
Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner California Flag (Avenue of Flags). Never worse
than third on turf and now possessing a career mark of 14-7-3-3, Quick Enough
has bankrolled $278,120.
"Well, we're in the (Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint [G2] at Churchill Downs
November 6)," O'Neill said. "Now all we need is for one of these guys (the
owners) to write a big check. Other than that, it's a strong possibility he's
going to go. We had talked to the Sarnos and the Suarezs that if he won today
and came out of it good, that they would be okay writing a check."
Bred in California by Harris Farms, Quick Enough was produced by the winning
Donna B. Quick (Moscow Ballet), also the dam of the stakes-placed Croxie (Redattore
[Brz]), the unraced juvenile Quick Save (Redattore [Brz]), a yearling colt by In
Excess (Ire) and a weanling colt by Lucky J. H. Donna B. Quick is a half-sister
to 2002 California Cup Sprint winner Unlimited Value (Present Value).
