Around 24 hours after the top three finishers in the Kentucky Derby (G1) duke it out in the Belmont (G1), a slew of Derby also-rans square off in the $400,000 Matt Winn (G3) back at Churchill Downs.

The deep-closing Final Gambit fared best of the Matt Winn contenders in the Derby, rallying from last in the field of 19 to finish fourth, a little more than four lengths behind Sovereignty. However, the Jeff Ruby (G3) winner might find the 1 1/16-mile distance of the Matt Winn a bit on the short side.

Likely to attract more support is Burnham Square, the Blue Grass (G1) and Holy Bull (G3) winner, whose momentum in the Derby was stalled when a tiring rival forced him to check at a crucial stage. Burnham Square recovered to finish sixth, but might have gone closer with a cleaner journey.

East Avenue, second by a nose in the Blue Grass, is a natural speed horse who didn't get out of the gate quick enough in the Derby to make the lead. He thus didn't run his best race in the classic, but is eligible to rebound on Sunday. Also returning from the Derby are Chunk of Gold (9th) and Coal Battle (11th).

Gaming competed on Derby Day, finishing an even third in the Pat Day Mile (G2), but hasn't really built on his fine juvenile form, which saw him capture the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and place in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and Los Alamitos Futurity (G2).

The longshot of the Matt Winn is Maryland shipper Just a Fair Shake, the runner-up in the Federico Tesio S. and restricted Sir Barton S. in his last two.
