Counting Stars stands out in Alabama

An open-lengths winner of the Acorn (G1) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga already this summer, Counting Stars will be heavily favored to make it three in a row on Saturday in the $600,000 Alabama (G1).

Although her stamina will be tested in the 1 1/4-mile Alabama, Counting Stars holds a serious class advantage over her five rivals. Her main rival, Always a Runner, was not entered.

Winner of the Kentucky Oaks (G1) over Counting Stars, Always a Runner was subsequently second in both the Acorn and Coaching Club American Oaks. Trainer Chad Brown said Always a Runner would point to the Cotillion (G1) at Parx next month.

A Brown-trained filly might still be the most serious threat to Counting Stars. Stakes newcomer My Gun’s Loaded, a daughter of Gun Runner, recorded Brisnet Speed ratings of 96 and 101 with back-to-back wins in maiden and allowance company at Saratoga. However, she has yet to race beyond one mile.

Measure was a distant third in the Coaching Club American Oaks and remains with relative upside compared to the other stakes veterans in the field, but has a 6 3/4-length gap to close on Counting Stars.

Though not quite as strong a favorite in the $300,000 Ballston Spa (G2), Segesta looms large in the 1 1/16-mile grass test for fillies and mares.

A dual Grade 1 winner since November, Segesta placed in the Just a Game (G1) and Diana (G1) in her last two starts. Her opposition includes Ozara and Deep Satin, one-two finishers in the 2025 Ballston Spa.
