Tomoya Ozasa’s T O Elvis pulled away with authority in his U.S. debut Saturday in the $939,600 Churchill Downs S. (G1) at Churchill Downs, easily dispatching a highly regarded field and rolling to a 3 1/4-length victory under jockey Ryusei Sakai.
It was the four-old son of Volatile’s first start outside of Japan.
T O Elvis rated in mid-pack for much of the race as Macho Music took the field of 11 through a quarter-mile in :22.46 and a half-mile in :45.03. Numerous contenders, including the favored Knightsbridge, overcame Macho Music as they entered the stretch, but it was obvious just outside the furlong marker who was strongest. T O Elvis had a bunch in the tank and had a slight lead through six furlongs in 1:08.57. He then extended it from there and was an easy winner, completing the seven-furlong contest in 1:20.49 over a fast main track.
Disruptor rallied for second while being no match for the winner, and following him past the line were Crazy Mason, Imagination, Cornucopian, Knightsbridge, Hall of Fame, Disco Time, Macho Music, and Point Dume.
Banishing bolted outward as they entered the far turn and was eventually pulled up. He was walked off under his own power.
Sakai, best known to American racing fans as the regular rider of Forever Young, was deservedly happy with Saturday’s proceedings.
“It’s so special to get a win like this at Churchill,” he said. “It’s been such a great experience.”
T O Elvis was bred in Kentucky by Jeff & Melissa Prunzik and produced by the multiple stakes winner Stopshoppingdebbie, a daughter of Curlin whose other produce includes stakes winner Generous Tipper (by Street Sense) and a 2026 colt by Maxfield.
T O Elvis, who also captured last year’s Capella S. (G3) at Nakayama Racecourse, exits Saturday’s score with a record of 9-6-0-3 and a bankroll of $1,149,212.
