Ramseys set Keeneland fall record

Last updated: 10/22/13 3:13 PM

On Sunday, owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey recorded their 13th victory of the

Keeneland fall meet when their homebred Captain Cook scored a front-running

four-length victory in the final race. With the performance, the Ramseys broke

the record for most wins by an owner during the fall meet that they reached in

2012 and shared with Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Roberts (1968).

Among the Ramseys' 13 wins are three stakes: the Breeders' Futurity with Wee

Miss Artie; the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup with Kitten's Dumplings; and

the Jessamine with Kitten Kaboodle.

With four days remaining in the season, the Ramseys have multiple chances to

extend their lead as leading owner. They have four horses entered Wednesday and

six horses entered in five races on Thursday.

The Ramseys' 25 victories during the 2013 Keeneland spring meet smashed the

previous record of 12 wins. They are on pace this fall to win or share the

leading owner title at Keeneland for the 13th time, which would put them just

one behind T.A. Grissom's record 14 meet titles.

The Ramseys have won outright or shared six spring meet owner titles (2004,

2006, 2010-13) and six fall meet titles (2000, 2002, 2007-09, 2012).

Two-time Eclipse Award recipients as outstanding owners, the Ramseys are the

year's leading owners by earnings with $10,797,599. They already have won six

meet titles nationally this year: Gulfstream (winter, 43 wins), Keeneland

(spring, 25), Churchill Downs (spring, 32), Saratoga (summer, 22), Kentucky

Downs (September, 9) and Churchill (September, 6).

Meanwhile, the leading trainer title at Keeneland appears to be firmly in the

grasp of Mike Maker, who has 11 victories. Graham Motion and Wesley Ward are

tied for second with five wins each. Maker won the leading trainer title in the

spring with an all-time Keeneland meet record 25 wins. He also was the leading

trainer during Keeneland's 2008 fall meet with nine wins.

The race for leading rider is, well, a horse race.

Rosie Napravnik holds a 10-9 advantage on Joe Rocco Jr., with Alan Garcia

lurking in third place with eight victories. Napravnik and Rocco are named on

five mounts Wednesday with Garcia named on three. None of the three jockeys has

won a Keeneland riding title.

Maker and Napravnik have teamed to win six races from 22 starts.
