Godolphin Racing's STELLAR JAYNE (Wild Rush) sprinted to the fore when the

gates opened in Sunday's $300,000

Ruffian H. (G1) and was never headed en route

to a 1 1/2-length decision under jockey Jerry Bailey. The Saeed bin Suroor-trained

gray covered 1 1/16 miles over the fast Belmont Park track in 1:41 4/5,

returning $4.50, $2.90 and $2.20 as the 6-5 favorite.

"She had a good winter in Dubai," bin Suroor said. "We really thought she

would be a star. We were very patient with her all the time. Her first race this

year was a prep for the main one today. The main target now is the (October 29)

Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). We'll see how she comes out of this race. If she is

happy and sound, maybe we would run her here in the (October 1) Beldame (G1).

But we could take her straight to the Breeders' Cup."

Under a ground-saving trip on the rail, the four-year-old Stellar Jayne got

the opening quarter in :23 4/5 with a persistent Capeside Lady (Cape Town)

tracking in second. That rival pressed the pace from the outside as Stellar

Jayne led through a half-mile in :47 and six furlongs in 1:10 4/5, but after a

mile in 1:35 1/5, Capeside Lady began to fade. The Belmont-loving Society

Selection (Coronado's Quest) angled out wide for the stretch run but could not

get to the winner in the end, settling for the place while four lengths clear of

Halory Leigh (Halory Hunter).

Off at nearly 7-2, Society Selection gave back $4 and $2.70 to complete the

$13.60 exacta. Halory Leigh paid $2.80 for the show on the bottom of the $64

trifecta, and was followed by Bending Strings (American Chance), Taygete (Miswaki)

and Capeside Lady.
