San Vicente
Blazing Meadows Farm and Stonerside Stable's TOO MUCH BLING (Rubiano) proved
too much for his rivals in the $150,000
San Vicente S. (G2) on Sunday at Santa
Anita Park. Storming to the early lead, the Bob Baffert-conditioned colt got
a ground saving trip under jockey Garrett Gomez, setting splits of
:21 3/5 and :43 4/5. Peace Chant (War Chant) moved into contention
after angling around a rival, and he threatened the leader entering the stretch.
The pair opened up six lengths on the rest of the field, going six furlongs in 1:08
4/5, but Too Much Bling was able to fend off his adversary en route to a 1
1/2-length victory, completing seven furlongs in 1:22 2/5 over a fast track.
"If he could have gone slower (early), he probably would have won by more," Baffert
said. "It's exciting to have a horse like this."
Sent off as the 4-5 favorite, Too Much Bling returned $3.60, $2.60 and $2.20
while leading $1 exotics of $6.10 (exacta), $65.20 (trifecta) and $324.40 for the
7-1-3-6 superfecta. Peace Chant ran a good second to give back $3.80 and $2.80
at 4-1 while New Joysey Jeff (Bright Launch) earned the bronze position another
3 3/4 lengths back to pay $4.60 at 29-1. Changing Weather (Storm Boot) completed
the superfecta with Bound to Be M V P (Snowbound), Sinister Minister (Old
Trieste), Sailors Sunset (Petionville) and Totally Gone (Gone West) rounding out
the order of finish.
"He put those horses away after about a half a mile," Gomez said. "For
the fractions we set, he came home a little slow but he didn't just crawl. He
did enough to get it done and for the circumstances and the way he had to do it
today, I think he ran a really good race."
Bred in Ohio by Destiny Farm, the gray sophomore is out of the stakes-winning
Rose Colored Lady (Formal Dinner), who has also produced multiple stakes winner
Barnsy (Langfuhr) and two-time stakes winner Ready for Roses (More than Ready).
She has a juvenile filly named Littlebitabling (Carson City) and an unnamed yearling filly by Langfuhr. This was Too Much Bling's
second win of the year, having annexed the San Miguel S. by four lengths last out, and
he now sports a record of 7-3-0-2 with $192,674 in earnings.
