Five sophomores, led by CashCall Futurity (G1) hero INTO MISCHIEF (Harlan's
Holiday), will go seven-eighths in the $150,000 San Vicente S. (G2) at Santa Anita
on Sunday. We respect the ability of the probable favorite, but we'll attempt to pull off
a minor upset with MASSIVE DRAMA (Kafwain).
Trained by Bob Baffert, Massive Drama captured his debut in fine fashion on
Breeders' Cup Friday and followed that up with a front-running score over Into
Mischief in the Hollywood Prevue S. (G3) over this event's distance.
The dark bay was a good third in the CashCall in his route debut prior to
getting fried on the lead in the San Rafael S. (G3), but we expect much better
on this day. The colt has trained forwardly in advance of this, and although we
feel that he is better on a dirt surface, he is the lone speed of this field
and will be difficult to catch. Garrett Gomez will take the reins in this one.
Into Mischief has done little wrong in three starts for Richard Mandella and
would not surprise us in the least with a win in this one. The talented colt
was visually impressive in his Grade 1 win and is the well-deserved favorite in
this compact field. The fleet bay will likely try to rate in second early prior
to putting in his stretch run under Victor Espinoza.
CARDINAL ZIN (Whywhywhy) was an impressive debut winner for Paddy Gallagher,
and followed that performance with an even third in the recent San Pedro S. The
chestnut will wheel back quickly following the San Pedro, but we trust the
colt's fine trainer and expect a good showing from him. We think the
three-year-old will improve off his previous start and produce enough of a late
kick, behind a strong pace, to complete the trifecta in this spot under Alex
Solis.
Del Mar Futurity (G1) hero GEORGIE BOY (Tribal Rule) has chosen this spot to
kick off his 2008 campaign, and the Kathy Walsh trainee will have to be at his
best to challenge these. The gelded sophomore had a fine juvenile season, which
included a facile score in the Graduation S. and a second-place effort in the
Best Pal S. (G2), and has worked swiftly in the mornings in preparation for this
campaign. We don't like the fact that Gomez chooses elsewhere and we'll take a
stand against the California-bred on this occasion. Rafael Bejarano will break
with the dark bay from the rail.
RED HOT FLAME (Malek [Chi]) was no factor behind the top pair in the Prevue
and hasn't improved much since then, so we'll leave this one off our tickets.
