Sand Springs preps for Mile
|
Diana S. (G1) heroine SAND SPRINGS (Dynaformer) breezed four furlongs in :48 over a fast main track at Belmont Park on Wednesday. The move was the second-fastest of 10 works at the distance. The Bill Mott-trained mare, who is pre-entered in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1), will shorten up in distance after setting the pace and finishing fourth, beaten two lengths, in the 1 1/4-mile Flower Bowl Invitational S. (G1) on October 1.
"A mile and a quarter has always been a little too far for her," Mott said. "We knew that the other day when we ran her in the Flower Bowl, but took our chance."
Prior to the Flower Bowl, Sand Springs won the nine-furlong Diana at Saratoga and the Just a Game Breeders' Cup H. (G2), defeating Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) contenders INTERCONTINENTAL (GB) (Danehill) and WONDER AGAIN (Silver Hawk) going one mile on the turf at Belmont Park. She won both in front-running fashion by 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 lengths, respectively.
Pat O'Brien Breeders' Cup H. (G2) winner IMPERIALISM (Langfuhr) worked in the pre-dawn hours over the main track beneath trainer Kristin Mulhall, who timed the colt herself and then caught a flight back to the West Coast. |
"He worked well; actually, this is the best I've felt him work," Mulhall
said. "I got him five-eighths in :58 2/5. He went his first quarter in :24 4/5
and the half in :47 1/5.
Imperialism rallied from last to win the seven-furlong Pat O'Brien at Del Mar
on August 21. The gray four-year-old made a move on the far turn before
finishing a distant fifth in the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup S. (G1) in his
last start on October 1.
"Ideally, seven furlongs is his best distance, but as long as there is speed
in the race, he's going to come at the end," Mulhall said. "I have all the
respect in the world for LOST IN THE FOG (Lost Soldier), but I think they are
going to be attacking him."
In other Breeders' Cup news:
Santa Anita H. (G1) winner ROCK HARD TEN (Kris S.) is scheduled to work seven
furlongs before Thursday's 1ST race at Santa Anita. It will be his final major
local prep prior to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Belmont Park on October
29. Trained by Richard Mandella, the four-year-old brings a four-race winning
skein into the 10-furlong Classic.
"We're just going to ship him (on Sunday)," Mandella said.
Unbeaten Arlington-Washington Breeders' Cup Lassie S. (G3) winner ORIGINAL
SPIN (Distorted Humor) arrived in New York on Tuesday after an uneventful van
ride from Chicago, according to Sherri Mitchell, wife of trainer Tony Mitchell.
"We took her to the paddock and jogged her once around the track
(Wednesday)," Sherri Mitchell said. "We just wanted to get her acquainted with
her new surroundings and she handled everything perfectly."
Jerry Bailey will ride Original Spin in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies
(G1).
Bailey will have mounts in every Breeders' Cup race. He could be on four
favorites: FIRST SAMURAI (Giant's Causeway) (Breeders' Cup Juvenile [G1]),
SHAKESPEARE (Theatrical [Ire]) (Breeders' Cup Turf [G1]), OUIJA BOARD (GB) (Cape
Cross [Ire]) (Filly & Mare Turf) and SAINT LIAM (Saint Ballado) (Classic).
World renowned equine surgeons Dr. Larry Bramlage and Dr. Wayne McIlwraith
will assist NBC Sports with horse health information as a part of the American
Association of Equine Practitioners' On Call program.
The first race on Breeders' Cup Day will be the $250,000 Sport Page H. (G3)
at seven furlongs. Post time for the Sport Page is noon (ET). The second race
will be the $250,000 Discovery H. (G3) at 8 1/2 furlongs.
Loews Cinemas ticket stubs from the upcoming motion picture "Dreamer:
Inspired by a True Story," can be redeemed for free general admission at Belmont
Park on Breeders' Cup Day. Ticket stubs will be accepted at gates B, C and D.
The film, starring Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning, opens Friday.
