Scenic Blast looks to storm Hollywood in American debut
|
Australian Horse of the Year SCENIC BLAST (Aus) (Scenic [Ire]), who starred in England last summer, brings his world-class sprint game to America for the first time in Sunday's $60,000 Kerlan Memorial H. at Hollywood Park. Now trained by John Shirreffs, the blaze-faced gelding will tote the top weight of 123 pounds in the six-furlong turf dash. Scenic Blast captured three Group 1 sprints in 2009 -- the Lightning S. (Aus-G1) and Newmarket H. (Aus-G1) at Flemington in his homeland, and the King's Stand S. (Eng-G1) at Royal Ascot.
The Lightning and King's Stand served as the first two legs of the Global Sprint Challenge, of which Scenic Blast became a leading protagonist. He took part in three other legs without much success, but with a few excuses along the way. Although only 10th in the July Cup (Eng-G1) and a badly-hampered last of 16 in the Sprinters S. (Jpn-G1), Scenic Blast still had the chance to collect a $1 million bonus, if he could win the December 13 Hong Kong Sprint (HK-G1). Unfortunately, he trailed home last of 14 and was found to have bled, a development that led to his being shipped to the United States.

While Scenic Blast reportedly won't add Lasix for his U.S. bow, the
globetrotting millionaire will don blinkers when he teams up with Mike Smith on
Sunday. His best efforts came from far off the pace last season, but the
headgear could trigger more early foot from the six-year-old.
If Scenic Blast is the poster boy for back class, the filly UNZIP ME (City
Zip) boasts strong current form. The Marty Jones trainee is riding a five-race
winning streak, all in wire to wire fashion, including the Irish O'Brien S. for
California-breds, the Las Cienegas H. (G3) and the Great Lady M. last time out
on May 21.
Drawn widest of all in post 7, just to the outside of Scenic Blast, Unzip Me
promises to sprint right to the early lead for Joe Talamo. She gets in with a
116-pound impost.
Unzip Me will attempt to become the second female to win the Kerlan. Cool
Air, who was trained by Jones' father Gary, won in 1994 when the race was called
the Hollywood Park Breeders' Cup H.
John Sadler, whose three wins in the race tops all trainers, will be
represented by Grade 2 winner NOBLE COURT (Doneraile Court). Sadler won the
inaugural running with Olympic Prospect in 1988, then tallied with Frost Free
(1990) and Get Funky (2008).
Noble Court showed versatility during his 2009 campaign. He landed the Joe
Hernandez S. over Santa Anita's downhill turf and the Ack Ack H. (G3) on
Hollywood's Cushion Track, and also placed in a pair of Grade 1 sprints on
synthetic surfaces. Noble Court has not raced since checking in fifth in the
grassy Impressive Luck H. on January 2 at Santa Anita.
Joel Rosario will guide the confirmed closer, who just missed in the 2007
Captain Squire H. in his only prior try on the Hollywood turf.
STONESIDE (Ire) (Marchand de Sable) has not won since the 2008 San Simeon H.
(G3), but the Julio Canani charge has been consistently hitting the board this
year against solid rivals. Among his useful efforts were a third in the
Impressive Luck; a close third to eventual Shoemaker Mile (G1) winner Victor's
Cry (Street Cry [Ire]) in a February allowance; and a recent second to Grade 1
hero Cost of Freedom (Cee's Tizzy), who came back to annex the Los Angeles H.
(G3). Martin Pedroza has the return call.
Rounding out the field are MY SUMMER SLEW (Siberian Summer), a
course-and-distance winner who comes off a third in the Los Angeles; KELLY LEAK
(Runaway Groom), the 2009 Sunland Derby victor who shortens up in hopes of
recapturing his old form; and the upwardly-mobile CAYAMBE (Helmsman),
two-for-two since being claimed by Victor Garcia.
