Seeking the Gold pensioned at Claiborne

Leading sire SEEKING THE GOLD (Mr. Prospector) has been retired from stud.

The 23-year-old stallion will remain at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky, farm

representative Bernie Sams said.

"Seeking the Gold has certainly left a mark on this industry. He was a

wonderful racehorse, and from the time his first crop hit the ground, he's been

a top stallion," Sams said. "It's always a privilege to be associated with a

horse of this caliber."

Sired and raised at Claiborne Farm, Seeking the Gold was bred and raced by

the Phipps family. One of the outstanding three-year-olds of 1988, Seeking the

Gold won his first four starts and overall finished first or second in 10

different stakes. His added-money wins include the Super Derby (G1), Dwyer S.

(G1), Peter Pan S. (G2) and Swale S. He was a narrowly beaten second in the

Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), Travers S. (G1) and Haskell Invitational (G1), and

occupied the same position in the Wood Memorial S. (G1) and Gotham S. (G2). He

raced just twice at age four, concluding his career with a nose second in the

1989 Metropolitan H. (G1).

Trained throughout his career by Shug McGaughey, Seeking the Gold retired

with a record of 15-8-6-0, $2,307,000.

In his first two crops, Seeking the Gold sired 15 stakes winners, including

champion fillies Flanders and Heavenly Prize, who combined to win six Grade

1 races in 1994. Other major runners by Seeking the Gold include English

highweight and Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Dubai Millennium; French

highweight Seeking the Pearl; Canadian champion Catch the Ring; Belmont S. (G1)

winner Jazil; Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner Pleasant Home; and Breeders' Cup

Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Cash Run.

Seeking the Gold, who was produced from the Buckpasser mare Con Game,

currently has 146 stakes horses, 88 stakes winners, and 50 graded stakes winners

in his 16 crops of racing age.
